As of today, since April 18, 2020 Zihuatanejo has registered a cumulative total of 1,970 confirmed cases of Covid-19 (10 more than yesterday), 150 that have resulted in fatalities, 54 that are currently active, and approximately 1,637 that have recovered. Numbers are coming down all over the nation. Let's hope this trend continues.

Update on the shootout. It turns out a barman at the Pacífica in Ixtapa named Cristian, around 30 years old, was assaulted in front of the zócalo while walking home. Apparently he was shot 3 times and taken to a hospital. No word on his condition because no newspaper will report things like this. One more reason why foreigners should take taxis home at night instead of walking. We are in desperate times with the pandemic with so many people out of work, and this is going to get worse before it gets better.

The mayor says the "remodelación" will be finished by Semana Santa. Since crews are already working 7 days a week and hardly advancing, and since so much remains to be done, I find this very unlikely. They are using enough concrete to pave an airport runway. Few if any tree roots along the entire beach have been left unscarred. I predict many will die slowly or fall over during summer storms. Plaza del Artista has become a hideous unrecognizable concrete monument to _______ (you fill in the blank). It really is painful to watch.

Zihuatanejo es un verdadero paraíso cicatrizado por ambiciosos y corruptos.

In spite of everything overly ambitious politicians and "entrepreneurs" do to Zihuatanejo, it remains a lovely place to be and its natural beauty continues shining through. We who make our living here certainly hope enough tourists and visitors believe that the travel hardships are worth it enough to come visit us here. I know that's how I felt when I first visited here 47 years ago and when I decided to move here 15 years later.

And having the love of such a remarkable woman who was literally born on our downtown beach only makes me feel like I'm the luckiest gringo in Mexico!

I see no justification for tearing up and repaving this simple lovely walkway and hurting businesses like that of our friends Mago and Karina who run this cute unpretentious beachwear shop that sells some excellent sombreros.

Is the master plan or intended result of the ongoing redevelopment available to see online by chance?

I'm guessing if it were, Rob would have already posted it. I'm also guessing, since some of the work and design have already changed, and in some cases hidden from view with a fence, the powers that be don't want the design published. Gives them shelter from more public outcry.

Apparently not exactly for the current project. I did see a plan in 2017, and there was so much outcry against it by my neighbors and us for the excessive use of concrete including on the beach that I thought for sure the government would go back to the drawing board, but apparently not. They supposedly modified the La Madera walkway to use a little less concrete as well as the pier, but they still used quite a lot, and almost every single plant they placed along La Madera's walkway (thousands) died within the first couple of months. This is a story I've seen repeat itself over and over with almost every mayor.

Here's a master plan that was made available for the Gober during one of his visits, but everyone else has only seen snippets. I've got some shots of the blueprints for various sections, but I don't feel like hunting them down and posting them. They are extremely disturbing for anyone who loves sandy beaches and healthy plants.

And if you look at the present construction on the webcam, you will see it doesn't look anything like the colored plan on the easel. I'm sure there are many more changes.
