Covid Quandary

by mosesk @, Ojai, CA, USA, Thursday, February 11, 2021, 19:08 (24 days ago)

My (Ventura) County opened up vaccinations to over 65 a few days ago.
I was able to make an appt for late Saturday morning.
I don't know whether it will be Pfizer or Moderna.
I am scheduled to leave for Zihua the following day.
And I plan to be in Zihua for about 2 months.
Consequently I will not be back in time for the second shot.

This leads to my confusion.
I don't know whether to take the first shot- and "possibly" get the second shot in Zihua- (long shot)
Or plan to get the second shot after I return.
Or forego the first shot entirely here and hope to get both in Zihua or when I return to California.

Any thoughts, suggestions, insights?

TALK WITH YOUR physician!

But I had this conversation with someone today. I WOULD HAVE OPTED for the first shot. Some protection is better than NONE!!! You can always re-course when you return!

I have done some research, but have not found anything that addresses whether one can start over with the one-two regimen after having a one earlier.
The general info seems to be that the first shot may give around 50% protection, which ramps up in the two weeks or so following the vaccination.
The second shot is the "booster" and increases the protection from 85-95%.
This is all very general.
Please don't quote me on my numbers.

What about the alternative of delaying your trip? That’s what we did. We had planned to leave today, but then Covid happened. We get our second shot this Friday. Because of dog sitter scheduling problems, we plan to go in early April. It is likely that delaying two months would be OK but that interval hasn’t been studied. The other potential problem would be you should get the same type of vaccine. Although it is unlikely a tourist would get vaccinated in Mexico, it would be best is it is the same vaccine.

Delaying is an option- but I don't want to look at it seriously.

Why don’t you want to look at delaying the trip? It’s safest for you and the folks in Zihuatanejo. It would only be 5-6 weeks. Keep in mind the the surging variants are caused by travel. There is pretty decent evidence out of Britain that vaccinated people are less likely to be spreaders.

Needless to say it's a VERY personal decision.
Based on my information and understanding of the best rational and researched science.
And then mixed in what I know about myself and my vigilance to adhere to best practices.
And then a dose of "amorphous feelings".

Thats pretty presumptuous on your part. Many countries don't even have enough vaccine to take care of their own, and you expect to come into town and jump the line for your second shot. Just think about it, the shot you get is one that a local person won't. And here I thought it was only those elitist New Yorkers flying to Florida to get vaccinated that were,______ well, you fill in blank.

Your attitude doesn't surprise me. You also must feel special thinking it's ok taking a vaccine shot that would otherwise be used to vaccinate a local resident. But then again if I remember correctly, you're the same guy who thought the yellow taped off area around the pier construction that was put in place to keep people out, didn't apply to you.

Jay- his "point" is not a good one as far as I am concerned.
Neither I more mindpilot are "presuming" anything.
His point is nothing more than casting aspersions on a very real concern.
People like him "project" all the time.

Mexico is struggling to get a sufficient number of vaccines for its citizens. To have someone come here as a tourist or visitor and expect to get a vaccine that could go to a citizen of this country seems just downright presumptuous and disrespectful.

Let's not keep playing silly games. You both alluded to getting shots here. Normally not a problem except that since countries like the USA have hoarded the current supply, countries like Mexico aren't receiving the supplies they had counted on. So I hope you will both do the right thing and get the vaccinations destined for you by your government before coming here. I'm a bit surprised we're even having this conversation. Residents who are already here and plan to remain here who have a CURP can count on receiving their vaccinations, but leisurely travelers should probably not count on vaccinations being available for them it until at least April or May.

That's not quite fair. We here in el norte are facing critical shortages too. Los Angeles just shut down its vaccination program for five days due to shortages. And it's only natural that countries will want to vaccinate their own first.

That wasn't what you said, but you are certainly free to play with semantics. Pretty sure I recall the USA denying sales to Mexico after Mexico allowed part of its expected shipment to be sent to smaller developing nations.

And it's only natural that countries will want to vaccinate their own first.

Maybe natural in a basic instinct sort of way, but I don't recall the USA giving up any of its supplies to smaller nations like Mexico did. So is Mexico just stupid to do so and then to seek help from its much larger neighbor with the manufacturing capability? Perhaps. But I still believe Mexico set the better more enlightened example, even if it means we have to wait a little longer.

I believe your English loses something in your mental translation. But at least you try to use big words even if you don't quite get their usage correct.

In contrast to the USA's rather disappointing response to Mexico's humble request, Mexico will receive 1.2 million doses of vaccine from India in March. A much more helpful gesture than that of the USA.

We did what was suggested earlier, got our first shot and then delayed our trip back down by 2 weeks so we could get our second shot. Not much of a very hard decision to make considering, we are getting our vaccines, and will be able to enjoy our time in Mexico even that much more knowing we have been vaccinated
