As of today, since April 18, 2020 Zihuatanejo has registered a cumulative total of 1,992 confirmed cases of Covid-19 (16 more than yesterday), 157 that have resulted in fatalities, 55 that are currently active, and approximately 1,652 that have recovered. La Unión currently registers 1 active case while Petatlán registers 8.

For those of you who love Zihuatanejo's natural beauty, the mayor announced that construction would begin mid-year on the 1200 room Acapulco-style skyscraper hotel at Playa Manzanillo. It will devastate the coral, privatize the beach and of course they won't leave the manzanillo trees because, while lovely, they are poisonous. SEMARNAT is possibly the only government entity that may be able to stop the loss of one of Zihuatanejo's prize jewels, but they need to hear from the public including our residents and visitors who definitely have a stake in this.

We've been enjoying refreshing evening breezes from the sierra, and the forecast calls for even cooler temps in the next few days, so for those of us here we may have to throw an extra sheet on the bed and turn the fan down a notch at night. For those of you way up north, enjoy your snow. :-D

This was worth running out to the beach for this morning!

Could you be a bit more specific as to where on Semart's website that we could lodge our concerns about playa Manzanillo? I took a gander at it but it is way less than obvious to this language limited gringo.

Their e-mail address is there along with their Twitter and Facebook accounts. [sarcasm]I didn't realize those were language specific[/sarcasm]. There may even be other methods, but with those three anyone can speak their piece. Feel free to use your best English if you aren't fluent in Spanish.

OK, figured it out, finally. I was expecting a link where it listed the email address but ended up having to copy and paste it instead. So, now my complaint has been duly registered. Much thanks Rob. insert sarcasm here

Great photo as usual. If I made posters of them, my wall would be full.

To bad about a new development. Not sure what business entity would build such a thing? Just seams like the wrong type of building for that location not to mention the entire area is low rise with style and appeal (Ixtapa Excluded) Thanks for the source in which to file a concern. All my other filings with the mayors or governors office have never received a reply, I figure my next email will go to the delete folder as well.

They aren't supposed to delete mail from concerned citizens, residents or even visitors. That would be unethical under the current administration's guidelines. Even if it doesn't get brought to the attention of "responsible authorities", it gets filed. But my experience is that when they hear from enough people about a problem, it gets attended to. I keep sending them photos of Playa Manzanillo along with my own concerns, but I'm just a lone voice. Even so, my concerns have caused some local authorities to emit statements trying to sugarcoat things, if not tell outright lies. Just need everyone to keep it up.

I'm not against the development per se, although I think it's ugly and inappropriate for here, but it belongs in Ixtapa or some other beach, not on Playa Manzanillo! Imagine if they put such a monstrosity on Playa Las Gatas, then folks would "get it". But because mostly tourists visit Playa Manzanillo not many locals are even aware of the project or the devastation it will cause. They're too concerned just trying to make ends meet from day to day.

Gracias, amigo. I think it's important to contact them. Their Facebook and Twitter pages are also excellent places to leave messages as well as to latch onto to accounts of some of their higher-ups and communicate directly with them, as I keep trying to do. Another newspaper article came out today with the mayor proudly boasting of the jobs this project will create, as if that justifies the ecocide and the privatization of this fragile beach. It saddens Lupita and me to see his ambition lead him down this path.
