Zihua and Covid - we want to come back!

by CarolSullivan, Tuesday, April 06, 2021, 14:11 (5 days ago)

Hello, out there,

We visited Zihua in Feb 2020 and absolutely fell in love and want to come back ASAP. We stayed at Hotel Irma and loved exploring all things Zihua. Then COVID hit.
Anyway, we can't get a feel for how the pandemic has affected your area and would like to come visit the first part of Jan 2022. We want to make reservations and don't know how to proceed safely.

Thoughts and Suggestions welcome.

Cheers,
Carol

Carol,
Do come back!
We've been here since December, and feel completely safe over here. Locals are really careful because they know this town thrives on tourism. We are careful too (social distancing, wearing masks), and have enjoyed walks, dining outside at places we trust, and the beauty of the area.

Feel into what is comfortable for you (i.e. fully vaccinated, partially vaccinated, public transport vs taxi of your choice, etc.), and act accordingly.

Zihua and Ixtapa and the people that work and live here have been hard hit by the pandemic with lack of tourism, they need people to come and spend money.

Take care

They also need people not to introduce any of the Covid variants. If you are fully vaccinated, it is extremely unlikely that you can transmit Covid. If you aren't it is possible that you could be adding to the problem. We are fully vaccinated and arrive next week.

Agree fully! Better to come fully vaccinated. The last think needed here are new variants.

Thanks for the clarification, Timmac

Hey, Carol. Please see all my daily Covid-19 reports going back pretty much to when we registered our first death here about a year ago. Look for posts by me with ZIH somewhere in the title. The hotel and service workers are doing a terrific job abiding by health safety protocols while helping our visitors to enjoy themselves as much as possible under the circumstances. Yes, there are a few idiots everywhere, but I think you'll feel as comfortable and as safe here as anywhere (if not safer).

It's likely things will be fairly stable by then. They are starting vaccinations soon. That said, as long as you have been fully vaccinated the risk is minimal both to yourself and the folks you are visiting. We got our second vaccine on Feb 19, fully immune by March 5. (at least as immune as you're going to get) We are back next week.

My advice, just do it as if the virus never happened. Things will be different (better) in 2022 from 2021. We spent a big part of our winter here and felt safer than being in the US. I understand people's reluctance, but I feel sad for those that didn't follow through with their plans and am sure glad we not among them.

Surely agree, Catlover!
I’m in Denver & our code is higher than Zihua’s!
We spent 3 weeks in Feb. Loved every minute!
Felt very safe!

Totally agree. Live like you are mortal because you are. Tough to beat going to the marcado for fresh fish, fruit and vegetables. Do all the things you are supposed to do safety-wise and LIVE. Masks are worn here more than my home town. Heck, I've heard people claim that when they are fully vaccinated they still won't go to the market. To each their own. I only have so many years left and personally I'm glad I haven't taken a year off and I believe that the shop and restaurant owners that I visit here are also happy that I didn't take the year off. Que tanga buen dia.

We were in Zihuatanejo for 2 weeks in March, having been fully vaccinated. It was as wonderful as ever, albeit quieter as very few tourists were there from the U.S. or Canada. We are from a city in the U.S. where people have been respecting mask mandates and distancing and were very pleased to see that the Zihua locals were overall doing the same. And don’t forget that it’s easy to spend most of your time outdoors there!
