PCR Testing

Well I have just found out that it is very hard to get a PCR test here in Zihua within the 72 hour requirement. Canada requires that, the airport does not accept anything else. I was scheduled to fly back home Friday, I went to the airport to do that today, they do not do it. Back to town and I can get it done but will not get the the results for 72 hours. I went and talked to a local doctor and she done some looking around and the best option is fly to Mexico City a day early, get the test at the airport and will have the results within 8 hours. If Zihuatenjo wants to have Canadian tourists they should get that one figured out. Have to cancel one flight, find another, get a room etc. My fault should have checked it out sooner but it is where I am at now.

Hola If you checked past posts on this subject, you would have seen that it is possible to get a rapid PCR test in Zihua. Last August several of us called Lab Clinica (755 108 4800) and made arrangements for them to come to our homes and do the test. They came to my house at 1pm on a Monday, took a sample from us and took it away to test. They emailed us the negative results on Tuesday evening. Our flight was on Wednesday afternoon.
PS Lab Clinica also gave us a certificate for our two doses of vaccine that we received.

What type of COVID TEST is offered at the ZIH Airport?

update, Our friends husband also a doctor was able to find a place me to test. Zihua Labs, result should be 24 to 36 hour which works for me.
Airport offers the antigen test, does not work for me,
Bit of a sticker shock, 3500 peso.
Anyways, stressful afternoon, cheaper than canceling a flight and booking a room in Mexico City

Worth it to sign up just to have access to all the businesses and services that use it to diffuse their own info. C'mon boys, don't be shy. ;-)

Not the kind of test Canadians need.

Go to Farmapronto across from el central market. You'll see "Dr. Box," where a nurse will give you PCR test. Results within one hour. Cost $700 pesos.

That is the cost for an antigen test, not the PCR test required for Canada. Just to keep things accurate.

Didi you ask Dr Box? As far as I know, that is the PCR test.

The one I took end of may at Dr Box was not PCR but antigen (I am Canadian but was flying back through US, so I could test with antigen, for the fist flight, but I then required to take a PCR test in the States before entering Canada… ).
If you get the result right away, 5-10 minutes, it is NOT PCR, it is antigen.
PCR testing needs at least a few hours most of the time. It will have to go through a lab.
The staff at another testing center in Zihua (a blue Laboratory on Los Ciruelos close to Los Cerezos) told me where the PCR lab was, I am not 100% sure but I think he said Morelia.
Our daughter is a nurse in Montreal and even in an hospital, it requires 1 hour or so to get the result.

First of all, why do you quote me ? I’m not asking any questions but giving specific details about a specific question (Dr Box) and the easy distinction between the tests. I am not giving any pricing nor phone numbers as you do..
Second, are you the only one allowed to share your personal experience on this forum?
Third of all, PLEASE DON’T YELL AT ME!
Thank you!

There is a PCR test made by Abbott called "ID-Now" that provides results in around 15 minutes. It is readily available (and free) at Walgreens in Washington state. The biggest challenge is setting up an appointment as they only do a limited number of tests a day. The Abbott site does say that it is available in Mexico but unfortunately does not give locations.

Really interesting, a laboratory « in a box ».

Might be a way too big investment for a local lab in Zihua though…

That’s great! Can you tell me the name of the lab in Zihua and if it does
The PCR test. I’m Canadian and that is the requisite test before returning.
I am double vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine and practice all the protocols
Can’t understand why the government warns us not to travel but airlines sell tickets? It’s creating cognitive dissonance!
Anyway i am trying to do the right thing...but I don’t know..
Perhaps waiting until 2022 is the better idea.
