old/ new topic... testing lab question

by maggie, Sunday, October 17, 2021, 16:09 (43 days ago)

I am thinking about travelling to Zihua for Christmas and New Years.... I will need a PCR Covid test for my return journey. Are there labs in Zihua that do this? what is the cost? and the time frame for results?
Also the Canadian government is strongly suggesting that we don't travel unless necessary. I am torn by this mandate and am very indecisive. Any thoughts or input from people who have travelled recently and returned to Canada or who are thinking about it in December will be very helpful;. Many Thanks,
M

I think the first consideration is whether or not you’ve been vaccinated. If not I would delay travel until you are.

No leaving or entering Canada by air if not fully vaccinated I believe

About the price and the lab for PCR test, I think it was discussed last week. There is a search box on the top of the page to help you find it. My advice will be to choose carefully the date of your return. Your sample should be taken less than 72 hours prior your flight to Canada and there was no service available on Saturday and Sunday in Zihua last time I needed it.
For the recommendation of our government, you should follow your instincts. Last year we were « stucked » in Zihua when Canada convinced the airlines to stop flights to Sun destinations and flights were cancelled with a two days notice. A lot of people were affected and Ottawa answer was « we warned you ». I don’t think they will do that again with the mandatory vaccination to travel but the situation is not returned to normal and you better be prepared to disruptions. For example, what if you test positive (Even without symptoms), are you ok to stay another ten days ? Some people are. I am. We will be in Zih paradise next month:brilliant: . I think it’s worth it, in my situation, in my case. But I can understand people who don’t want to take the risk.

Thanks so much for your input! Great info about timing my return.
I could stay another 10 days if testing positive if the hotel agrees to letting me stay!
I am thinking about it all...would dearly love to not be in Vancouver over the holidays
and playa la ropa is such a comfort and haven for my soul that i am certain the solace will outweigh :brilliant: the risk involved
Maybe I’ll just toss a peso...heads yes...tails no!
Enjoy your time in the sun!

Heading back down from Canada in early November, vaccinated and not worried, spent all winter there last year, followed restrictions and just adjusted to what changes came our way. It is already too cold here!!

My situation is quite different in that I stay at a private house in Troncones, but I arrived from Vancouver Island last week and will be returning to the Island in mid-December.

I have two doses of mRNA. The Island has higher vaccination levels than where I am in Mexico, but I’m not going to work while here and I have less contact with others here. I can walk on the beach for an hour and not come with 20 metres of someone else. I pretty much stay to myself, except for buying groceries.

In past years I have flown on Alaska Airlines or WestJet. Several years ago Alaska changed its schedule and YVR/ZIH now requires overnight in LA both ways. Last year WestJet was too unpredictable, so I flew AeroMexico, YVR-MEX-ZIH. Leave YVR around 23:00 hrs, five hour layover at MEX and at ZIH around 12:30 hrs. I did that again last week.

The return flight leaves ZIH early afternoon and puts me at YVR around 22:00 hours.

There is more info a few post back where I posted on PCR testing
Yes you can get the test in Zihua.
Turnaround for test results was 36 hours or so.
I returned to Canada on Friday the 15th, no problems encountered on my return.
Arrivecan app needed the printed copy of my vaccination record, will not accept the QR code that is required here in BC
Before getting my boarding pass's at the Zihua airport I had to show the paper record of proof of vaccine, my test results from the lab in Zihua, and the Arrivecan conformation code.

When you were filling out your ArriveCan questionnaire, did you have to send them a picture of the Covid card given to us BCers when we received our vaccinations?

We'll be arriving in Zihua via AeroMexico in a couple of weeks and I'm not looking forward to all the paperwork required for our return trip.

Any tips going to or returning from Zihua via AeroMexico from YVR are welcome.:-)

Gracias.

Using the arrivecan was a bit stressful but once I got started it was fairly user friendly. I completed it with a iPhone, I took pictures of my original documents (card) there is space for the two shots. two different pictures of the same card in my case. They uploaded The test results are identified by your passport number and test site logs into a portal that arrivecan must have access to? Had screen shots of everything saved.
It will be interesting to see how the tour companies deal with the charter flights. Where I had the test done it was two person office
For me the hardest part was finding a testing location and the 72 hour window shrinks pretty fast

Thank you for the information. Glad you pointed out you could do it all on an Iphone --- which is all I will have with me for Internet access.

Just a couple of more questions --- did you travel alone and if not, was there a provision on the ArriveCan app where you could submit information for another person just in one filing or does each individual have to do it themselves? How long did it take from the time you submitted your info to ArriveCan to get a response from them?

The ArriveCan app only allows you to proceed so far until you're within the 72 hr. time period which is the reason for these questions and I don't want to be thrown a curve at the last minute.

I certainly appreciate your help and information.

Gracias,

Roberto!

Hola Roberto. We do not have a cell or smartphone, only an Android tablet. Will this present any difficulties receiving confirmation of PCR test results, and/or the subsequent completion of the ArriveCan documentation, prior to departure?
I'm also interested in whether a couple can complete one ArriveCan form, or is one required for each person.

Hello Ironwood
I think your question was intended for Paulcbk.
I’m interested to find out too if more than one person’s information can be done on a single form with ArriveCAN.

Arrivecan : Yes you can submit the form for more than one person (8 in fact), but the others must be spouse or children and have the same travel plan. It is really easy to fill. When you will submit, you will receive the confirmation number instantly. This is that number you must show the immigration officer. Here is a useful link : https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/coronavirus-disease-covid-19/arrivecan.html

Hola everybody, we are coming down to Zihua in January from Montreal and our return flight is on a Sunday afternoon. We have to do a PCR test 72 hours before departure so it has to be done on Thursday afternoon. Do someone know if the result will be available on Friday or are they working on Saturday…

This is what I am wondering about as well - are results from a Zihua lab/doctor coming back in this "24-36 hours" no matter what day you are tested?

I worry Saturday/Sunday are not included in the turn around times for these labs - Is a Friday test providing results on Saturday or Sunday?

My flight leaves Monday afternoon: 72 hours prior makes it Friday afternoon or Saturday for a test...but are my results coming in no later than noon on Monday when I hit the airport?? Are the labs even open on the weekend to get a test?

Not sure if Monday departures for Canada are a good idea all of a sudden.

No, she's referring to the PCR test required to re-enter Canada.

I traveled alone, there is space to add more than one but it had to be direct family members
As for using a android device that is fine, one thing that was noted was that you could not transfer between devices when submitting the form. If you start with a smartphone you have to finish with that smartphone not change to a tablet part way thru. Most important point is that you need a current email address and access to either wifi or a phone plan in Zihua
My experience was fine and would have no issues doing it again, I will be back in Zihua next month.

Hoping to do a Wednesday 5 pm test for a Saturday 4 pm departure. I can't remember if they just send out results Monday to Friday? Oh well I can think of worse things than being stuck in Zihua.

Switch Health has introduced a new portable RT‑LAMP test kit that makes completing your travel testing requirements easier. It’s a molecular test, similar to a PCR, that meets testing requirements for entry into Canada.
Pack the test with you when you leave Canada – no need to spend your travel time hunting down a clinic while abroad.
At destination, self-administer the test at your convenience, accompanied by a telehealth professional via an online telehealth session. No need to send to a lab for processing.
Get your result in about 45 minutes with an official electronic report suitable for travel.
It meets the testing requirements by the Government of Canada for entry into Canada.
It’s also accepted by other select countries requiring a molecular test for entry, so you can choose to use it at home, before leaving Canada.

It is a PCR test so while it would work, you only need an antigen test for US return. Keep in mind that as of Nov. 8 if you are not fully vaccinated, the test must be within 24 hours. No change in time frame if you are fully vaccinated.

Yes, but you would just need the antigen test which they also offer at a much lower price.
