I know, I'm going to hear about using the ATM's but we are old fashioned and still exchange cash (USD) if possible so wondering what the current rate is. Also, does Banco Azteca in Elektra still do the exchanges.
We missed our trip last year due to the pandemic so are really looking forward to coming this year!!B-)

I'm old and old fashioned, but I'm also cheap and careful, so I use an ATM; usually one at Mega Soriana and never at night. You can google exchange rates.

Official rate is around 20.35 to the US dollar. One you get from the bank ATM will be a bit less.

And one you get from an actual exchange of dollars at a bank/exchange place will be way less than that.

ATM, is the best choice. If the ATM offers you an exchange rate DECLINE. Then continue the process and machine will give you a better rate.

About the only bank that does convert is Intercam, passport required.

I've always liked Banamex Bank on Ejido street. Fair rates and your card only goes in part way so the machine can't "eat" it. Just check with a bank employee as to what the daily limit is.

Your “home bank” will likely also have set a daily limit. Good idea to check with them before you travel.

Take it back to the bank and use a card at the ATM.

Timole, using US or Canadian dollars for daily transactions is not the best choice unless you can find a bank or Casa de Cambio (money exchange store) that has a decent rate. That is where you want to exchange your dollars for pesos. This is difficult but not impossible in resort towns such as Zihuatanejo. (The airports are even worse.) As recommended, check out the local Zihua banks for the best exchange rates. We who live along the border with Mexico are lucky because there is very strong competition among the numerous Casas de Cambio and you can get great exchange rates, often better than what the banks will give you. Where do you live?

You can also pay with your credit card/debit card whenever possible as Visa/Mastercard actually give you a decent exchange rate. Just be very careful to ask your bank or credit union if they charge a "foreign transaction fee." This is a garbage fee which is pure profit for the banks. Many banks are now offering credit cards without this garbage fee, most notably CapitalOne. Also, if the merchant asks you if you want to use their exchange service, just so no. Let Visa/Mastercard handle the exchange rate.

Have an AWESOME time in Zihuatanejo!

Everyone has to realize that there are still a few people out there who need/choose to change USD to pesos.

We have a very dear friend who insists on doing this every year. He WILL NOT use an ATM. So, off to Electra or Intercam, no matter the logic of this decision. We still love him!

Klamath Falls, Oregon.

Just as an example, MANY MANY MANY years go when we had a cash business going, coming to Mexico was a great place to bring our US cash, turn it into pesos and be able to make income into a vacation!

I know someone who does a potion of his business in cash and then uses that cash for vacation spending. I’m certain that he reports this business income to the IRS of course.;-)

In the USA I go to my local Wells Fargo bank and purchase pesos. No limit. I do have to make the request online with bank and use particular branches. And this last trip down I had Wells Fargo FedEx the peso’s to my home address in USA before I flew down. When I run out…I will do a direct wire transfer from my Wells Fargo account to Santander. per agreement between those banks. . Best exchange rate possible at the time of the transfer. WF allows $800 USD per transaction. No ZIH bank account required. Transaction # from WF to Santander required. Also Passport and local address and/or phone number requested by the Teller at pick up.
Beats ATM rates. Requires lining up at the bank.

Well what did you get for an exchange rate? Remember to check your account a week later for charges beyond $800. Personally I would never bank at WF.
