Health officials for Guerrero report 2 confirmed currently active cases of Covid-19 in Zihuatanejo, NO cases in La Unión, Petatlán or Técpan, 29 in Acapulco, and 73 in the entire state.

Sunday's cultural events at Zihuatanejo's Cancha Municipal were cancelled due to the remnants of Lester. It's been raining off and on all day this Sunday, and the surf was extremely high due to the presence of mar de fondo along with the storm surge. The ports and piers are closed to small navigation until at least Sep. 20. And it looks like we have another storm system on the way. A shame so many tourists without any money to spend were here. The local shops (besides Oxxo) might've prospered since the tourists couldn't go to Isla Ixtapa or Playa Las Gatas all weekend.

This Sunday morning as usual turtles had nested all over the downtown beach as they've been doing recently, but apparently the eggs were up for grabs by poachers. A damn shame. Since phone service was out it wasn't possible to call Protección Civil to collect some eggs that a turtle laid around 7:30 this morning, so a friend and I took turns watching the nest while two poachers with their bucket sat nearby waiting for us to leave. I kept waving to them whenever they turned around to see if we were still there. Finally cell service came back on and we reached P.C. who took their time but finally showed up. Apparently P.C. takes the eggs to the hatchery at La Ropa, which isn't correct at all since they should hatch on the beach where they were laid so that they'll return to it. If only we had a Director de Ecología who actually cared about his responsibilities as well as our local flora and fauna, and who had a clue what he was doing.

In Barra de Potosí there's an amazing lodging known as Hacienda La Rusa, an oasis in paradise, tucked in between the village and the restaurants. Affordable lodging in a Mexican colonial-style bed & breakfast inn with 2 swimming pools. Rent individual suites or rent the entire hacienda.
