Driving to Puerto Escondido for Xmas... info / ride share?

I've been invited to PE for Christmas and am considering my options. flying is out, it's insanely expensive then, that leaves bus or driving.

If you have driven it before can you give me some real scoop on the road conditions, how long it really takes, are there tolls/how much they cost?

ALSO...any one interested in ridesharing down? I have a car, but also am open to going in a more fuel efficient vehicle and sharing expenses. Dates are somewhat flexible at this point - but want to arrive by the 23rd the latest. Returning by the 30th or earlier or after the 1st.

Thanks :-)
Jennifer

MJ, it might help if you were to detail just exactly where you are leaving from, yes?

On another website that shall remain nameless, taking the bus to Acapulco and then Puerto Escondido was both recommended and slammed. The individual who slammed the idea said it was an awful 14 hour bus ride and suggested taking a flight to Oaxaca and then Puerto Escondido. The individual who recommended it said they took a night bus and did not have to change in Acapulco.

Personally, I'd take the bus. Let the pros drive and go during the night or wee hours of the morning so you can sleep and enjoy the day when you arrive. If there's a direct luxury class, I'd use that. Otherwise go with the flow and remember: Estrella de Oro has its own bus terminal but almost always withing easy walking distance of the main terminal, Central de Autobuses, used by the rest of the buslines. So if you find yourself with a long wait between arrival and departure times, say in Acapulco, it's often worth your while to walk to the other bus station to check their departure times for the same route. We've saved quite a few hours that way when traveling by bus in Guerrero.
