Playa Azul

I am curious to learn more about the small town of Playa azul which I know is not too far from Zihuatanejo. Any insight would be appreciated.

Playa Azul is not a huge hit with foreign tourists. Perhaps a lot of the indifference is caused by a beach that is wide open to the vagaries of the Pacific Ocean. There are a number of hotels and perhaps one of the higher rated ones is the Hotel Playa Azul. I would assign it perhaps two and a half stars. The town itself is rather sleepy and dusty. No one really regards the local stores for much more than incidental purchases, most go to neighboring La Mira on Sunday Tianguis or further to Lazaro Cardenas to shop.

Because I live close by I regard Playa Azul as rather "boring". On a scale of activities, and interests, I would rate Zihuatanejo as a seven, Ixtapa as a five, Barra de Navidad as a seven (Melaque Included) and Playa as a solid two. Oh, you're interested in what I consider as being a "Ten"? San Cristobal de Las Casas, and perhaps Oaxaca City. The scale is based on interesting things to do and experience.

I hope this answer spurs interest for others to chime in...

Thank you for your very well written reply.i have visited zihua many times; liked it very much but also find that as we have a total of 12 days on this trip we want to explore a little. i have been to Troncones and not for me. We are thinking Barra and maybe also uruapan if it's not too far by bus. any other suggestions for a couple of working class folks from the midwest who like a little off the beaten path. again thank you. it is way too easy to get so comfortable in zihuatanejo that we go nowhere.P.S. We have been to Taxco twice already.

About five hours from Zihua is Patzcuaro, something not to be missed. An ancient colonial city and market frequented by Tarascan indigenas. Take the bus to the bus station in Patzcuaro, then a short taxi ride to either of the plazas, Don Vasco or Gertrudis Bocanegra. You will be surrounded by a galaxy of hotels and restaurants. The open market on the little zocalo is a real treat.

Dress warm Patzcuaro is at 2,200 meters elevation (around 7,000 ft.) and can be chilly in the morning. I'll bet once you arrive your "overnight" visit will not be enough to sate your thirst for this beautiful and friendly city, it's one of the top ten attractions in Mexico for a good reason.

(IMO) A stay in Zihuatanejo with a jaunt to Patzcuaro would be hard to top --- anywhere by any two nearby cities in Mexico

Actually, it's only about a 4-hour drive to Pátzcuaro from Zihuatanejo. And a lovely drive at that.

Nikki, if you go to my Homepage and use the Site Search Engine (the one here on the Message Board only searches the forum) you'll find a true wealth of information in words and photos about Pátzcuaro.

I also wrote a little trip report several years ago that is still relevant that you might appreciate.

I agree with other posters about a trip up to Patz. We went there 2 years ago and will return in a couple of weeks. If you want more detailed info, just email me (one minnesotan to another).
