First timer Semana Santa

by calirose, Tuesday, January 25, 2011, 19:11 (2514 days ago)

I was so excited with the thought of making a trip to Zihua. I am traveling alone and after reading about all these muggings (armed) I am quite a bit concerned. Should I reconsider my trip...not go out for dinner or at night period...always take a taxi...I am not the usual tourist but doing this alone makes me think I could be a target for some thief. I planned to spend my days on the beach enjoying the sun, sand, water, drinks, and food. Can I only go out during the day? Will there be a bigger Police presence because of Semana Santa? Is it safer the week before Easter or not a good idea? Sorry if this is a lot of questions to address, but I would feel better with a few of you giving me the heads up about this time frame. I know it could happen to anyone/anywhere but am I putting a big fat bulls-eye on my head/wallet?

WE are presently on our second of three annual trips to Zihua. We don't worry any more about crime in Zihua than we do at home in Anchorage. My personal safety rules for anywhere we travel: Don't stray from the "touristy" parts of town at night, don't wear jewelry, don't stumble around drunk, don't get money from ATMs at night, don't carry more money than you need and keep it in a safe place (I use a waterproof container that hangs around my neck - from Magellans),and be friendly and respectful to the locals. Enjoy your visit.

Thank you Frostbite and Randy...just needed some reassurance from those of you that do this a lot. This is my first solo. I will be staying in a condo above La Ropa and walking up and down daily (before dark). I will use my common sense and no drunk dancing on tables!! Although my G/daughter would get a kick out of that picture.

I am a woman here by myself for most of the time I am in Zihua. I pay attention here just like I would anywhere on vacation. If I were staying on La Ropa I would always cab home after dark. And probably I would do the same if I were staying anywhere out of the "right downtown" area. When there are lots of people around there is usually safety in numbers. Lots of people will be here during Semana Santa.

Thank you Lady M for your input. I thought about the safety in numbers for Semana Santa, but I also wondered if the increase in visitors also provides more opportunity for the bad guys? I wont be going down any dark quiet streets alone at night, and I will take taxi's back to my condo as well. To get a taxi do I wave one down or are there taxi stands everywhere?

No problem getting a taxi as there are plenty and always one in sight, even if your in a dark alley. Just walk up to or hail one. Be familiar with the correct price and verify it with him before getting in.

As most robberies are crimes of opportunity when no one is a witness, I would suspect that the huge influx of people for Semana Santa would have quite the chilling effect on then. Taxis are everywhere and, if not, just ask any establishment with a phone to please call one and they will be there within 5 minutes.

allen, thank you for the taxi info. I had the same thought about the crowds being a deterrent to the bad guys, I hope this is the case.

Dos Equis Lager is widely available in Zihua; the amber version but rarely. My favorite Mexican beer is Noche Buena, but it's only available around Christmas. I have stashed a case in my refrigerator.
