The other side of "Paradise"

My wife, daughter and I went to deliver some warm clothing that was kindly donated by some clients/friends to the people who make a life picking through what we throw away. I would like to say it was a sobering experience but I have seen this level of poverty many times.

I post this here for a few reasons. To show that what you donate to me goes where I feel it is needed most. To demonstrate the strength and resilience of people to find a way however they can and to remind you that just behind the hotels and beaches there lies another world, the real one.

Yes, I will accept donations if you bring them to me and if you would like to accompany me to deliver them, I am sure we can arrange something.

Thank you, Will for putting a picture on what everyone has heard about but not seen. My Godson was moved to tears and he is 9. Should really make people happy for what they have even though they think is is not much.

Great to see you and Belem yesterday.

A sober reminder

Excellent reminder. I would also like to take advantage of this topic to remind folks that when they discard shampoos, perfumes, lotions, toothpaste, colognes, cleaning liquids, medicines... really ANY container... to destroy their containers so that they don't end up on the black market with potentially dangerous contents. The black market is a huge business in Mexico, and unscrupulous people will pay the pepenadores to separate containers that can be used to fill and resell with potentially harmful substances. Since uneducated, illiterate and poor folks in most places have no idea of the difference between a black market product and the real thing, people are getting poisoned and ill all over the country because of this problem.

The other side of "Paradise"-a question

Clearly these folks could use some help. How is a gringo to tell though, whether or not the folks are not part of the squatter communities that Rob talks of from time to time.

Thanks, Wil. We all need a reminder now and again. Kind of puts the "poor us in our sweatshirts" discussion into perspective.

Complicated problems with no easy solutions. Except maybe one family at a time.

To where should we bring them?

Hi Connie, I am in Troncones. If that is to far I am sure Rob will accept donations at Lupita's Boutique as well. Either way, things will get to where they need to be. Thank you for caring enough to ask.

Wow, thanks for the wakeup! A good picture is, indeed, worth a thousand words. We'll do what we can.
