Taking cats to Mexico

We will be coming down for an extended period (at least five weeks) on April 20. For the first time we will be bringing our two cats. We will be flying on Alaska Airlines from YVR to LAX and on to ZIH the same day. Does anyone have any tips for us?

I understand that we have to have a certificate of health issued no more than 10 days before we enter Mexico. We have the appointment with the vet for April 12. We know we have to have an IATSA-standards travel crate for each cat. We are working on that.

Any other tips?

Yes, I recommend a very mild tranquilizer for your cats to help them cope with the extremely stressful journey (for a cat). Your vet should be able to help you out.

It was 23 years ago since I last brought a cat to Mexico so I am probably not up to date on the regs, but I do remember stopping by the Mexican Consulate in Miami on our way to the airport for some paperwork. You may want to double check with your local Consulate.

Check Alaska's WEB site, but I believe the international health certificate has to be within 5 days of travel... It used to be 3, but was recently changed. Also, proof of current rabies vaccine. Te customs folks at the Zihua airport are sticklers for everything, I repeat Everything, being perfect, so make sure the form is completed perfectly... Then, your little kitties will get their own little green cards!

If it's the same as dogs, the certificate has to be within 10 days of travel to Mexico. Make sure you have your Vet write a letter on their letterhead and signed that your cats have been tested and treated if needed for internal and external parasites. This is a new regulation and there isn't a place on the forms for it.

I give my little dog Rescue Remedy, it's a plant extract so no fear in a bad reaction, you can even sprinkle it in their beds as well as give it orally. I'd be careful with any type of sedatives, the potency sometimes increases in high altitude.

Have fun!
