IT'S A CRIME TO KILL THIS TREE!

This boy is doing what many of us residents should have done long ago when this plan was first presented to the public! The sign he is holding says "It's a crime to kill this tree!".

There are only two trees left on Zihuatanejo Boulevard. Dozens were yanked out and of the ones that were replanted the replanting job was done so poorly that I doubt any of the trees will survive.

What is the name of this tree? Is this the tree that they make black furniture from? Next, they use varnish or similar to finish the furniture?

¿Cómo se llama este árbol? Es este el árbol de que hacen muebles negros? ¿Entonces usan brilla para completar los muebles?

This tree is a ceiba, a sacred tree to the Mayans. Its soft wood is not normally sought for woodworking purposes, however it produces a fruit that has often been used to make fabrics including the stuffing for life vests (kapok).

El arbol se conoce como ceiba, y es sagrado para los maya. Su madera suave es no es apto para muebles o casas, sin embargo su fruta se usa para textiles incluyendo los chalecos de salvavidas.

To appreciate its size you need only to view it as you walk down the cyclopista from Ixtapa, it appears as though it is the one where the road split to two lanes at the bottom of the hill from Ixtapa. Walking past today I noticed the excavator right at its roots with people standing around the trees base, perhaps they were preventing its removal at that very time. many big trees gone with the new construction but lets hope transplants survive as once completed your new road will hopefully bring you more tourism. It should also be better for commerce and a safer road for your citizens especially once they finish the autopista connection. Pretty interesting to see the bridge work they are doing to joing what they have completed to the top of the hill leading onto the twinned section down into Zihua. If you cycle you can use the newer autopista traffic free right now to Pantla give or take a few minor slow downs and small construction spots.

THE TREE IS SAVED!... for now

by ZihuaRob ⌂ @, Zihuatanejo, Gro. México, Friday, April 20, 2012, 08:44 (398 days ago) @ ixiron

Amazing! All those neighbors waited until the last two trees before deciding saving them was actually more important than a video game or a TV program. The office of the Director de Ecología has contacted the engineers of the road construction and it was agreed to alter the plans to save the 80-year old ceiba. The nearby ficus tree was not mentioned, but seeing as it is also of considerable size perhaps it also will remain. Of the 280 or so trees already removed, a large number of them were coconut palm trees, and some were relocated to the airport highway where they can be seen dried up and dead or dying, much to the despair of locals who treasured their majesty.

Slowly but surely it appears parts of the population are waking up from their slumber!

I'm certainly proud of those folks for what they achieved! :like:

There were about 50 people there tonight about 7. The police were there and I thought maybe to protect someone or the tree, but NO. They were just there directing traffic.

We talked months ago about what was going to happen there and so far I was right on. They have destroyed all plant life. Too bad, but you could see it happening by the way they were doing the road.

Down at the basketball court all except one of the big palm trees are dead. They have finally decided to water them and what a laugh that is. 16 months and now they decide to try and save a couple of them. I can not imagine the area with no trees but they are working on it fast.

Yes, those palm trees at the basketball court are a sad sight. Too bad, when they redesigned the open space last year, that they missed the boat entirely and failed to plant any shade trees or place more than a couple of benches. Most Mexican zocalos (and I guess the basketball court is Zihua's zocalo) provide some respite from the heat and noise of the day. Not Zihua's, which is like walking through a furnace at mid-day.

As for protecting trees, kudos to whoever it was that placed a sign on one of the trees on the Adelita side of the footbridge near Salvador's restaurant. The tree bears incredible flowers that apparently bloom at night, looking like fiber optics. The sign says:
Arbol protegerlo
Clavellina
Pseudo bombax elliptical
Respeto

I took a beautiful photo of the blossoms under a full moon, and
will post it someday when I learn how.

On the subject of Adelita, work still has not been completed, more than 5 1/2 months later. The underground wiring remains to be done, as does the paving in the intersection going up Heart Attack Hill, near Rufo's. The drainage ditch just west of Salvador's that runs into the canal is also not yet completed. Salvador's patio has been resurfaced with the same concreto estampado as the street, his bar and barstools are gone, and the large concrete island around his tree has been down-sized. His awning hasn't yet been replaced.
And, surprisingly, Mariscos Carlitos is upgrading, apparently putting in some ground-level tables. To us, Carlitos has always seemed a bit of a forbidding place. Perhaps no longer.
We offer a tip of the hat to those businesses along Adelita that have survived, at least so far, a whole winter of aggravation.
Word on the street there is that Zihua has spent 25 million pesos refurbishing Adelita. There are also rumours that they intend doing the rest of Adelita, all the way up to the Irma. That, of course, will be critical information for the hundreds of folks who stay up in that area of La Madera. Hopefully, someone local can keep the rest of us in the loop as to what happens and when.

IT'S A CRIME TO KILL THIS TREE!-Talking about shade

Talking about shade trees in a Zocolo.???

I am now in Guanajuato and the zocolo here has so much shade they could consider sharing some with Zihua. I am amazed at the thought process, or lack of, that went into the downtown area of Zihua as far as trees are concerned. Lots of old trees were killed. Long story on how many I planted on our little street only to have them cut down or pulled out with a machine. Guess I will just have to figure out a way to plant some more somewhere that could make a difference.

tree better than old growth trees (as long as they remain healthy/not a topple over threat)! They can never be replaced.
At one point, I wanted/considered making guitars from Parrota wood but sensibility prevented me from doing so. S

Actually it turns out he was simply the first person to show up for the protest that neighbors had apparently planned. He was joined later by several dozen other folks including a group of students.

For those Canadians and American visitors who may remember the old Trans Canada highway between Banff and Lake Louise there was a huge spruce tree they built the highway around with one lane going on each side. It succumbed to disease after many decades of making this location in the route memorable for us when we were young. Even though the old ree had to be cut down a younger well established one in front of it to the west was left to become the next big tree where the road forks.

The hope is that the Ceiba tree stays and becomes a defining point in the new road!

It seems that human nature does not do anything until that moment in time that it will affect you personally. It makes me proud to see that young boy holding that sign. He is trying to make a difference. Do not criticize him for trying. Question for all the locals… How tall is the largest ceiba you have seen? These trees are fascinating based on the long trunk and the huge canopy.
