Fishing Tournament revisited

On the morning of the last day of Zihuatanejo's XXIX Torneo Anual de Pez Vela Lupita and I went to check out the standings. Little had changed since the day before or the previous day but there were some new category leaders. Overall hardly any fish were caught.

We watched a beautiful sunrise from the pier and greeted many of our friends.

Champion surfer Pamela Verboonen from Las Gatas was getting an early start to go find the perfect wave.

On our way back home we stopped to show our respect as sailors hoisted the colors in front of the Apostadero Naval de la Armada de México.

Later that afternoon Lupita and I went to celebrate 23 years of the second time we fell in love at first sight with each other. (See my blog from a few years ago on this subject titled 20 Years Ago Today… or Last Sunday.) We like to sort of recreate the event and stare into each others eyes. Mushy romantic stuff that I'm sure would bore most of you to death.

The tournament is supposed to end at 3:00 pm, and by 5:00 pm the winners should have been announced and awarded their BIG PRIZES. So while we waited we took over one of the "official" tents and our family and friends made good use of it until it had to be officially readied for the "officials".

The beer and whisky flowed and folks everywhere were smiling wide.

We eventually moved into another tent when one of the merchants packed up their wares, but even though a few "officials" were now in their official tent, we noticed that 5 o'clock came and went, but the party went on.

It was getting close to 7:00 pm and even the drunkest of drunks was noticing something was awry. Fraud was the buzzword. Photos and videos were played over and over. Tempers flared and accusations were made. It probably didn't help matters that the first- and third-place winners were brothers-in-law. The awards ceremony was eventually cancelled, and as of this morning the mess had still not been sorted out.

But the rest of us still had a real good time. B-)

This may take quite some time to sort out. Not going to be a pretty thing. Tempers are running really hot.

Quite the contrary! I'm sure many of us enjoyed the link to 5/7/89. Lupita was gorgeous then too; on the other hand, you ...

Congratulations on your "anniversary".

rob,

i appreciate your coverage of this event. even from up here at forty-some degrees of latitude i can applaud your effort,
albeit accomplished in the midst of middling hostility. a great photo essay.
although i'm certain it is a serious matter to the participants, i see the
story as something of a fiasco, but quite amusing... with a connection, perhaps, to the freely flowing spirits.

¡salud! martin

Fishing Tournament - update

The BIG PRIZES were finally awarded yesterday afternoon, including to the controversial winner who was originally accused of using a fish caught outside the parameters of the tournament. Not sure if politics had more to do with resolving the problem than fact-finding, but anyway around, it is over!
