Taxi rates?

by BL @, Saturday, July 07, 2012, 12:46 (5085 days ago)

Dear Rob, are the taxi rates on your page updated? I was told by a couple of drivers the rates had gone up 5 pesos in Ixtapa, is there any truth to that? Anybody else facing the same issue or is it only me?

Thanks!

No increase in rates has been authorized, so if they are charging you more than what is posted on my website they are violating the law. Good luck finding someone to enforce the law, though.

One caveat is that if you are at a hotel and the cabs are not at the door, but rather the hotel calls them from the street to the door there is an extra 5 peso charge for a called taxi.

In this heat you need to have the a/c on and they do charge extra for that too.

I gave up on trying to pay the "authorized" rate last year. Couldn't find a taxi driver who would quote the authorized rate or who could find a rate card in his vehicle. Very unlike Patzcuaro where there is never a question about the rate NOR do you have to ask and agrees on a rate before you get in cab. Must be a difference in culture. Also, most of the time taxi's here have change but it is still a good idea to ask.

If you know the rate, why would you ever pay more than that amount? Do not ask. Just put the money in the hand of the driver and get out.

Do not ask.

I TOTALLY disagree..... as verbally confirming the cost of The Ride BEFORE you enter a cab is as courteous to the driver as it is to YOURSELF.

Amables, no cuesta NADA.

You could be correct, and I do ask if it is to a place I have not been several times. Most places I use a cab are the set rate and no need to ask.

I hate to say, but since I live here I don't even bother to ask the rate. If I am charged excessively I simply tell the driver what the fare is. In fluent Spanish, of course.

Thank you all for the responses. I do know about the extra $5 if you call it in, and I speak fluent Spanish, so I guess I will be quoting the official rates.

Gracias!

I have to agree .... not all taxi drivers are bad ones ... most are just trying to feed their families in this terrible economy with no tourists!! Who is quibbling about 5 damn pesos anyway???

I think for most people it is not about the price. It is about getting ripped off because they think we don't know any better. At least that is what it is for me.

Well.... EXACTLY.... (sorta).... which is why I personally extend the driver the courtesy of regularly confirming the fare via his open window prior to entering the cab with something like, "Cuanto cuesta por XXXXX? $ = XXXX, Verdad amigo!! :-D

When YOU thus state the fare, then HE knows that you know The Right Fare.....
