Vancouver Tony is in Hospital

One of this Boards' and Zihuatanejo's biggest and longest fans, Vancouver Tony Hodge is, alas, in hospital, having suffered a head injury after a fall at home.

This is the note I was sent today from his wife Vickie. They met each other over twenty years ago at Coconuts Restaurant in Centro.

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to let you know what is happening with Tony. He has been in the hospital now for over a month, he fell and hit his head and has had 4 surgeries to the brain area. His progress is slow and we are not sure if he will be home anytime soon or at all.

My goodness! I sure hope he recovers. This sounds terribly serious.

You just never know when something as simple as slipping/tripping and falling can become a life-threatening injury.

This is EXTREMELY serious. I think one of two things happened. Either he fell and caused bleeding in or around his brain, or he bled in or around his brain causing the fall. The most common thing from a fall would be bleeding around his brain, called a subdural hematoma. These are usually simple to take care of and unless he has some sort of bleeding problem it is unlikely that they would have to operate 4 times. I think given the repeated surgeries over a month, that somehow he bled into his brain. My bet would be an aneurysm that is leaking that they can't get stopped. Since he has been hospitalized for a month the odds on his survival are pretty good, unless other complications develop, and there are a ton of those if you're hospitalized for a month. Unfortunately, the odds of him surviving and returning to normal are, I suspect, quite low. I hope I'm wrong. Although I've never met him, I've enjoyed reading his comments over the years, and hope that I am completely wrong and that he makes a full recovery.

Man, that is some sad news. No wonder we have not heard from him lately. Here's hoping he recovers.

My sincerest best wishes for strength & hope for both Vicky & Tony in this very dark time. I'm sad to have to agree completely with Timmac's assessment & prognosis but Tony is a tough old navy bird so there may still be hope!

Sorry to hear of the events. I don't know VT except thru his posts but always enjoyed them.

As I get older it is amazing the number of my peers (inclduing my wife)who are seriously injury and mostly head injuries as the result of a fall. My daughter says all "old" people shouled be encassed in bubble wrap and have a helmet permanently tied to their head.

Oh man, our life and the good health so important to it are very fragile. Get well Tony ....I'll miss arguing with you and many from Zihua and the Board want to hear from you soon !

Hi Vickie. Please give my best to Tony. Although we have never met I have followed him for many years on this board and exchanged a few emails over the years. He is truly one of the originals. I hope he recovers soon and can get back to posting on Robs board.
