I went through So many changes in my many early trips to Zihuatanejo, and I remember
most of them. Like the first Ice cream cone. The lines were a block long. The first
Past-milk. The first frozen steaks... from Mexico City. I ordered one the first nite.
it Looked great, But it was frozen SOLID inside. The cook nearly fell on the floor laughing.

Those were great days. Every day a new adventure...... It changed my life.

Wow! You were truly fortunate to have experienced the real Zihuatanejo before all the development and expropriations and mass marketing and tourist traps! Visitors back then were of a different caliber. Most spoke some Spanish. Few complained about anything, least of all the rustic way of life. Everyone had to be fit because they walked everywhere. And visitors weren't separated by what they could afford since there was pretty much a one-size-fits-all offering of lodgings and services. Kerosene lamps lit the nights, folks went to bed at a decent hour, and you could hear a cricket a kilometer away! You've been a fortunate man indeed, my dear friend!

Recibe fuertes abrazos y mucho amor por parte de Lupita y yo.

Went to dinner with some friends and my parents to the Canima (sp) and I ordered a FRESH FISH FILET. I was so looking forward to my first Mexican fish and was almost drooling. Did not drool for long. When I cut into it for the first bite it was ice crystals. Frozen FRESH fish filet. Laughable now.

SUCH lucky people to have seen things in a time when it appeared we were still exploring and in awe of what we have come to feel is our god-given right. Fun to hear your stories Cri-Cri... you really should write a book!:star:

Cri Cri, When Did Zihuatanejo Get 24 Hour Electrical Service

by michoacan, Sunday, February 06, 2011, 00:03 (2451 days ago) @ NoName

When I visited back in the early 1970's, the lights went off in the evening. Also remember something about an ice house being out on the main highway. It was a dawn to dusk butt buster getting to Zihuatanejo from Acapulco. We purchased coconuts para agua, one peso each. I don't remember a road going around to La Ropa. We camped on the main beach and the mosquitoes had a field day. We subsisted on fried fish, tamales, and cerveza al tiempo. The cost for a day of eating came out to be around sixty cents U.S. There were some vendors hawking tacos de tortuga. How things get faded out after forty years! In another twenty I don't know ;-)

Do you recall what hotels were here when you arrived? When Leapy arrived in the early 60's he stayed at the Safari Club, quite uptown with an airport and all.

The Club Safari didn't have its own airport, rather it was located adjacent to our small airport which was located near where the CAPAZ offices are now.

The Boat in the Bay

Cri Cri - Do you recall or did you ever know what boat that was in the bay?

I seem to recall this was discussed before but, alas, I've forgotten if there was a conclusion reached by anyone.

I'm convinced the ship in the bay is John Wayne's yacht "Wild Goose".
