Orchids, birds, fun, an apology and more!

by Hunter-MX ⌂ @, Troncones, Gro. Mexico, Friday, February 11, 2011, 21:24 (2440 days ago)

Here are some wonderful orchids currently in bloom at the waterfalls. I am working to ID as many as possible so as to pass that knowledge on to my customers...

So just a day or so ago I had a person cancel two tours they had scheduled with me with barely a days notice because of something I posted on this board. The other day when learning of the death of our friend in SF I replied using a four letter profanity modified with an asterisk. I was told that this was offensive enough and showed such a lack of morals as to make this person concerned about my influence on their child. I am not a person accustomed to the spot light, nor have I ever been known to hold back my feelings or emotions. Apparently now that I am becoming "known" I need to be far more cautious about my actions here amongst my friends on this board so as not to offend nor disappoint others. I only hope my physical actions speak louder and my reputation is stronger then the use of a word in a moment of high emotion. My error cost not only my family, but those who depend on me for their income at my destinations as well.

So sorry Wil that someone who evidently does not know you would make such a statement, and do something so senseless because of something posted anywhere. I know you to have high morals and to be a wonderful person as well as a great friend. I have no problem recommending you for your tours and would trust you with anything, including kids. Sorry someone did not use any better judgement than they thought you used.

wrong person apologizing

The error wasn't yours but the people that judged you by the wrong (and very short) measuring stick. Their loss, not yours, amigo. F*CK'EM! They're the ones who should be apologizing to YOU!

What a pompous a$$hole, or should I say rectum, to spare his/her delicate sensitivities. While you're out a couple of bucks, their loss is certainly greater, not having the pleasure of enjoying one of your tours. BTW, did you get my e-mail?

Well that one sure does have me scratching my head. My first reaction is that you are better off without them but I do realize what a jam it put you in, not to mention the lost revenue. If they are really so concerned about the morals of their children, one would hope they would set a better example themselves as how to conduct themselves in business transactions. If they are intent on protecting their children from foul language, they probably should not be bringing them to Mexico. My very first spanish learned as a youngster was besa me cula.

It is immoral to cancel like they did

by cdoc, New York State, Saturday, February 12, 2011, 17:38 (2440 days ago) @ frostbite

If they contracted with you (even verbally) than they had an obligation to pay you.
If they want to set an example, they should honor their own commitments....and they beter keep that kid of the F*&kin school bus.....

Unless a deposit was procured, they have every write to bail because of what Hunter said! It's THEIR money that unfortunately didn't end up in Hunter's wallet. Why? Because he offended somebody! NOT a good way to conduct and STAY in business!

Nonsense!

I also think they owe him something. Out of a moral obligation if not a legal one. I also do not think he owes anyone an apology. He did not purposely offend anyone and has always, as far as I can tell, conducted himself with honor on this board and his clients fall over themselves saying what a nice guy he is and what an enjoyable experience his tours are. If it was my business, and I have been in business, I would wave them good riddance and be glad that I did not have to put up, who knows what, on the tour. If they are that picky about something they see on the internet only G@d knows how they would be out in the bush. Sometimes personal integrity in business is a good thing. I would not tend to do business with someone if I thought they sucked up to everyone, no matter their demeanor, just to get their business. I have not even considered going on his tour before now (seen plenty of waterfalls and butterflies) but now I think I will.
I do hope that they are reading this thread and have had a chance to contemplate their actions.

My opinion is they booked a tour and for whatever reason they decided to cancel they still owe the money. If they did not like what he said and did not want to go on the tour, FINE, but pay for the days booked and be on your way. Wil is probably better off without them except he should not have to loose money when he probably could have booked other people had he not saved their days. Low class folks IMO.

I am with Fran. Paypal and a deposit.

See. Here's the deal. People wonder why bureaucracy exists. Wonder why there are so many regulation. You can see it happening here.

Wil set up a nice business. He's a knowledgeable guy. He has some awesome contacts. He's trying to make a living and support a family. He trusts people. He takes your word as a bond.

And then things like this start to happen. No, Wil doesn't need a union (he's a small business, hello) but I would say he will probably be thinking about a PayPal account and a non-refundable deposit clause in the near future if human nature does not start moving his way.

He has a business to run. I know Wil and I know he would prefer a certain kind of business that is premised on all of us having a certain code of honor and shared set of values when we deal with one another. An understanding, if you will, that is not shaken by a couple of top row keyboard characters.

But, Wil. PayPal and Non-Refundable deposit. You got to make a living, guy. A day lost in high season is a day you don't get back. Everybody else, cut some slack here. Wil is learning many lessons and some of them, from my perspective, are unfortunate.

My business policy is simple: I stick to my principles and I refuse to do business with assholes. Money is nice, but intact principles are better. And the respect they earn me will always enrich me more than any amount of money can.

Hi Will!

I dont know you aside from this board but anybody that would be as silly as judging you over a swear,in the context it was said, needs their head checked. If they are so concerned about their kids,I sure hope their kids never leave home as for sure they will hear that every day in school. After having seen your posts,I have no worry about your morals.Sorry you lost some money over this but in the big picture, you are likely better off...Keep your chin up and keep up the good work...I will have no issue sending business your way!

Will,

Gorgeous photos !! As usual...! You do such a service to all of us to post them and also to identify things the way you do. Thank you so much.

I'm sorry for that person's judgmental shortsightedness and uncaring rudeness in making a last minute cancellation. It caused totally unnecessary economic loss for a number of people who will feel it strongly perhaps in the case of those at your destinations (where's the morality in that? ...one might ask) not to mention their own loss of a beautiful experience.

I am a strong believer in caring for the shaping of our children's morality carefully. And we do have a rule about language in the Children's Library...'que no digan grocerias'. But the purpose is to teach them to be respectful toward each other and toward life in general...not to teach them to be inflexible and mean about executing rules.

I also believe that what our children learn is what they learn from living with their adult's modeling in the most important issues like showing love and responsibility in our actions with others. In this case, they may have learned to judge people wrongly and renig in a commitment -negatively affecting others - because of inflexibility.

No one who has been following you on this board with care doesn't realize you are a good person. That slip of language in such a moment - to me - only indicated how much shock and sting you felt in the loss of your friend. Their reaction was a mistaken over-reaction. They could have quite easily spoken to you about any concern and requested that you be careful about language on the tour.

I understand that people have different traditions with regard to what is appropriate in the event of a death and some would find it perhaps not the place for that language and thus feel grated by it. But it was also clear that your expression showed that you feel this board to be a kind of home. Your feelings were strong about losing your friend and your expression was immediate and very personal. Some flexibility and understanding was called for in this case.

I would much rather have a child occasionally be exposed to a slip like that (which would show them that even a strong man is deeply affected by the passing of a friend more than anything else) as long as they learn to respect others, care for their community and the earth around them...things that you clearly teach in your way of being and in your actions.

I hope your season fills up well with lucky families who will love your high quality tours.

Hasta pronto,
Laura

On several occasions during the times I have been with Wil I felt like hiding under the table with my potty mouth ;-)
Because, trust me, Wil does NOT speak like me. He is truely a gentle man.
Geesh, some people. Sorry Wil, their loss.

Thanks for all the kind words and support. I really do appreciate it. My apology stands though, I should be a bit more careful as others are affected by my actions these days. This person was also interested in some aid work with the folks at the landfill and I am afraid that may now not happen for my fault. I sincerely feel bad about this.

However, on a less serious note. At least I am not alone in my inappropriate use of words...:wtf:

Uh, Wil, the folks at the landfill swear much worse than you even know how to, yet "this person" wants to help them? I smell a hypocrite!

hope it has made you feel a little better about your only human faux pas.
We can never quite know how our words will affect others no matter how hard we try to be kind and conscious. And you are one kind and conscious human.:brilliant:

Hi, Are you still looking for orchid IDs?

The first is Mormodes. Probably species buccinator. This species comes in a lot of different color variations. It can smell sort of awful. It is pollinated by flies.

The second is an Epidendrum. There are a LOT of species of Epidendrum in Mexico. I dont know which species this is.

The third is a Cattleya (Guarianthe) aurantiaca. http://cattleya.wikidot.com/cattleya-aurantiaca
Nice color variant shown in your photo. These are pollinated by hummingbirds.

The fourth is an Oncidium, or "dancing Lady Orchid".

Your last orchid photo is another Mormodes.

I am visiting Zihuantenejo next month.
I would love to find some orchids to photograph and admire.

Thanks for the pleasure of seeing these photos!
