Regardless your agreement or dissagreement with things discussed on this board everyone has to support student educations. My question is what type of school supplies are best brought to Zihuatanejo. Don't want to bring pencils if everyone has lots. Is it pencils, paper, chalk, certain kinds of books (obviously in Spanish), notebooks or what. I don't plan on supplying all schools but certainly would like to bring something to help but just don't know what.

I think it depends on which school. We recently were unloading some things to the school in Troncones and they passed over pencils, pens, and paints and were VERY excited for the dry eraser board pens. Apparently those are tough to find or quite spendy in Zihuatanejo. We certainly hope to load up on those for our next trip.

because of the baggage charge on many flights and the weight restrictions we have pretty well stopped taking things to Mexico, instead we purchase the supplies in Mexico. Before I retired, the kids in the school I worked in would go on a collection blitz and by the end of it we had two good sized back packs full of goodies. That worked well at the time, but I think purchasing the supplies in Mexico has a double whamo. Buying locally helps the economy as well as ultimately benefitting the kids. Just a thought.

Please buy the school supplies in zihua, that way you have supported the school kids and have helped the local economy.

So wouldn't it be best to simply make a cash donation so the school teacher can buy what is needed?

No, you should not give cash to any teachers.

If we want to make a cash donation, who should it be given to? Should we slide the pesos under your door? LOL Seriously, is there someone to whom we can make a donation and know it will go for school supplies? If not, is there a list of what supplies are need and where do we leave them?

You may make an on-line PayPal donation thru www.porlosninos.com, the Sailfest foundation. We purchase the supplies in Zihuatanejo and distribute them to teachers who have submitted a list of their classroom needs.

Glue is something that I always bring down with me. Elmers washable stick glue. I have found it is something everybody needs and wants.

Good to know. I put out a duffle bag at work a few weeks ago, and MAN did I collect a lot of glue sticks. Glad they'll be put to good use.

UPDATE: I am now down one box of crayons. In related news, picking up after my dog tomorrow should be a more colorful experience than I'm used to.

Oh no! forgive me, but this has made me laugh!! Hope everything comes out OK! (pun intended!)
Now I am getting close to an answer. Understand the problem with $ as Rob pointed out but also don't want to bring something that is not needed. So far I have glue sticks and eraserable markers. What else? Not planning on saving the world but like the idea of bringing something that may not be easily obtained and helps the kids. Guess I can leave it at Lupita's?

Colored pencils and pencils that write black on one end and red on the other. I can't think of what the name of them are right now.
I went to one of the famous walmart stores during their back to school sale and spend $60.00 US and supplied a whole school up in the mountains with what they needed for the year -notebooks. Those were bought here. Shop where your money buys the most.
