Li'l JERK!

by ZihuaRob ⌂ @, Zihuatanejo, México, Monday, June 10, 2013, 17:46 (4746 days ago)

A 4.3 temblor at 5:21PM gave us a li'l JERK, but I don't believe it was enough to cause any damage anywhere.

Epicenter was located 22km northeast of Zihuatanejo near a tiny village called Parota.

Don't they seem to be getting closer to Zihua?

While the epicenters may or may not be necessarily getting closer, Carol (from a historical perspective), there is NO Doubt that the compound ‘reverberant vibrational effects’ can certainly be seen around Z Area’s various hillside residential projects.

Particularly, I’ve seen numerous areas all around town over the past year that have required fairly $ignificant shoring-up of exposed hillside-sides (usually along streets and property rears), to prevent the ongoing erosion of now loosened shale, from what was once in large part fairly stable original excavation work. Such retaining wall structures are ‘usually’ done in aesthetically-pleasing, quality stone masonry….. (where affordable).

I would assume that such repeated / increasing requirement is predictably due to the subsequent movement of the substrate in the direct shake-n-wake of even the “milder” seismic events here, which apparently occur on a somewhat frequent basis.

Yes, singing tegoches ALWAYS welcome !

And what is a tegoche?

Los tegoches (the common Oaxacan name) are a type of small spotted wren , Sydney, with their lovely little mottled back feathers in reddish brown and black with creamy white dots; with a dark ‘bandido’ eye-band under a rusty copper-colored head; a plump little body with an ever-insistent “gallo” chest, and found nearly throughout México.

Whatever they’re called here locally, their “song” is UNmistakable anywhere. And as a perennial FAV, it’s an ever-welcome sweeeeeeet audio addition to our general Living Environment with 24/7 enjoyment ..... without the cruelty of cages!! And, by comparison too, tegoches are a fairly “sanitary” little house guest (albeit only when POST-construction clean-up is complete)!

We’ve luckily had ever-sweet tegoches nesting annually around our various homes over the years on very frequent occasion, though never in such a blatantly up-front-n-center / brazenly within-reach “trusting” boldness as are these little guys in our home this year!!

Our maid insists that it is a sign of good luck, sort of a House Blessing, which I hope it is…..

.

BUT….. what started-out as a “cute” LITTLE open nest some 14 or so days ago:

.

Has now grown into a rather LARGE ‘enclosed compound’ with a bay-facing entry tunnel:

.

With construction work continuing still on a now final days soft finish-cushioning details” basis:

.

While the skittish chachalacas look down in ever-bewilderment…. over such fearless (thus rewarding) tegoche Bravado!![image]

But HEY….. speaking ‘bout the-birds-n-the-bees…. Z area is exploding with Life this morning in the wake of but our first recent rainy sprinkles:

Z Bay is currently dotted with 40+ LARGE patches of fish-a-jumpin; the trees are near-deafening with the annual Cicadas just arriving; the infrequent frigates are out in droves; the wasps are almost blinding as they TOO seek-out a new home spot; the largatillas are “papering the walls” and having a virtual endless buffet with the onslaught of recently emerged moths; the chachalacas are going unusually NUTS this morning; multiple sightings of the rarely seen VIBRANT Red cardinals and bright turquoise-backed Jays; tell-tale signs of tejon visits last night for the first time in weeks; the infrequent black iguanas are visibly 'populating' the adjacent trees as numerous lizard types are scurring 'round The Bush enmasse; and even the MAC Attack is Back, as our resident tarantula has made his reappearance after months of No Shows..... while amid it ALL, the nearby 'colorful carpinteros' are justifiably Keepin The Beat !

Yeah, gotta luv Z rains, as this is definitely Z frickin Dr. Seuss barrio….... ever-thankfully!! :jam:

Ah, so tegoches are the friendly little wrens with the lovely song that like to invite themselves into our hotel rooms now and then.
I love that you are willing to have them make themselves at home in your home.

Thanks for the in-depth explanation of the kind of bird along with the photos. What a lovely place for a bird nest. Looks like they have it all.

Thanks for the explanation. Great pics! We don't have a chandelier in Zihua, so no tegoches, but I did clean out an abandoned nest in the dining area a couple of years ago, that the maid somehow missed. A pair of robins has built a nest just outside our living room window here in Anchorage and we've enjoyed all the activity. They've been removing eggshells, but we have yet to see the young.

Aaaaaaaah, your welcome…… as I now have Z ol camera necessarily “by my side” daily at my desk across from the dining room, and always “at the ready” for those opportune, ever-amazing ‘Tegoche Moments’!!

While I, like you, have had the rewarding option of living comparatively “among nature” for a large part of my life, I’ve NEVER seen such fearlessness from animals in the wild as is displayed by these little local “gallo” wrens…… with exception perhaps of the frickin chimpanzees in KENYA!! :-o

NTL, the fotos that I’D love to one day see are those of your current Montana Remodel. While it’s been many-a-moon that I’ve spent time in Snow Country, the memories of skiing throughout the eastern slopes there seems like lifetimes ago….. and ALL Good Memories !!

Send me your e-mail address and I'll forward a picture of me offering a moose some celery a couple of weeks ago. I have no clue about posting photos.
The place in Montana will be new construction. We're going the German Passive House route and then one step further hoping for Net Zero Energy by installing solar water heating panels and lots of photovoltaics on the roof.

While there is skiing in the area, the Bitterroot Valley is considered the Banana Belt of the state, with Hamilton's average annual snowfall 26", with not more than 1" or 2" on the ground at any time. My buddy down the street owns neither a snow blower nor a snow shovel. We hope to close on the 29th of this month and anticipate leaving the prospect of shoveling 3 decks and blowing the snow of 150 feet of driveway numerous times each winter a rapidly fading memory.

I understand what you mean. Usually your words are with the pictures. It all made sense to me after scrolling down, but it was different than normal.
