School supplies/children's clothes- would like to visit scho

by mnponyexpress, Monday, February 21, 2011, 11:29 (3891 days ago)

We will be staying at the Melia Azul in March. Last year we befriended a gentleman at the market area on Playa Linda. He had some boys working with/for him- said they came from San Jose- a bit N- to work to make money for their families while on 2 week break from school (before Easter). We are wondering if it is "doable" to bring a bag w/ school type supplies, and children's clothes and take a taxi from the Melia Azul (?? probablilty of English speaking taxi driver- we try to use Spanish as much as possible but are very limited....) to a school in the area that could use some supplies and there might be children who could use clothes. Would it be reasonable to "drop in" and spend some time observing the school? (Our daughter is 8 yrs old.) I realize here in the states this would not be acceptable and am wondering if the same might stand true for a small rural or village school in the Ixtapa/San Jose area- we want to be respectful. Would also want to be cognizant of safety. Please advise- is this reasonable?- suggestion as to a school to go to?- getting there and back?- what to bring? Thank you kindly.

Thank you for your caring generosity as you plan your trip! This is definitely a good idea. My only suggestion would be that you go with a guide or have a contact person there to receive you.

I don't know San Jose to comment with any specifics but I would guess it would be a good idea to have a contact person there or someone who could take you there rather than to try and go alone and just drop in.

That having been said, I doubt very much that your visit would be received with anything other than happy gratitude and that you and your daughter would be welcome to observe (that's without actually knowing the policy of those particular teachers...but I'm sure they will need the supplies and be very happy for your thinking of them).

SO maybe you can make contact with the same people you met last year or have a guide take you.

Thank you for your generosity and caring that you are making part of your travel experience here. The schools in our area are truly in need of such help. I'm sure they will be very grateful at this school in San Jose.

Hasta pronto,

I don't know which school you are referring to in "San José de Ixtapa", which most of us still call Barrio Viejo. Most schools are legitimate and licensed schools, but some are established by land thieves as one of the requisites for obtaining a favorable zoning change and acquiring land titles. I have endeavored over the years to deter folks from getting involved with the latter. So before taking anything to the school you should probably visit it first with your acquaintence who can also provide you with an introduction to the school's director, which I believe would be the time to make an appointment to come to the school with donations to distribute so as not to disrupt their class schedule without prior notice.

Almost all our schools have great needs, and likewise, there is no shortage of needy schoolchildren. Anything you can imagine is needed, but here is a list that was published here several years ago: Re: School supplies

Here are some photos of some of the donations of clothing and supplies that we delivered to one local needy school: Cayacal Schools Receive Donations

I would love to have you visit Troncones, tour the schools with me and receive your donations for school supplies and clothing for our residents....but....after viewing the photos of the village Will has adopted, I'm feeling just a little greedy and am suggesting you contact him for a tour of the cascadas, the village and school. He goes by Hunter on the board. My fellow friends who continue to support me in Troncones...do you agree with me and not feel insulted my suggestion?

I absolutely agree with you and am so pleased to hear you make such a suggestion. It is true that the Ttoncones schools receive a great deal -
thanks to your efforts - but the small schools in the mountain villages are also in great need. Thanks Barb!!!!

Not just the mountain villages are in need. Barrio Nuevo has a one-room overcrowded elementary school that would truly break your heart if you saw the conditions those little kids have to study in. There is simply no shortage of communities and schools that have been all but forgotten by the government (except when politicians visit with a hundrd and one promises during election campaigns).

Rob,
Is it still cool to leave these donations with Lupita at her boutique?

Yes yes yes, my much esteemed and appreciated Deno! Lupita and our daughter Valeria are very good at organizing donations into individual packets to be delivered by them personally to needy children in local schools. We've received some donations this year, but donations are way down from previous years and it's been a while since we've been able to get together enough items to deliver to an individual classroom, much less an entire rural school as we have done in previous years.

Lupita and Valeria will be overjoyed to receive donations at Lupita's Boutique.

Thank you for the thoughts/suggestions- they've resulted in my narrowing our "quest" so now I'm seeking more advice:

Any connections to "guides" who could assist us in getting from Melia Azul to a school (legitimate school) in the area- small village/rural school for a couple of hours some morning? I will try and find the Hunter person on this site that was referred to as well. (I'm not sure that I'll be able to locate the gentleman we met at the Playa Linda market last year who talked about needs in the "San Jose" area N of Playa Linda area.) A guide who has English skills would be helpful to us w/ limited Spanish skills (although we do try!) Assume it would also be ok to bring some treats....in addition to school supplies/clothes. Thank you kindly.

Contact my friend (and former English student) Roberto Velasco via e-mail at transvel_pin (at) hotmail.com . Either he or his brother Gustavo should be able to assist you in the manner you need. They are terrific and trustworthy people, and they also know how to give an excellent tour. ;-)

Here I am if you wish to contact me. There are hundreds of schools in many communities that need aid. I would be happy to take you to the small mountain village that is my home away from home and show you around. I can't say they are more deserving then anyone else though.

If someone wishes to leave donations with me please contact me directly so I can be sure they are going where I feel they are most needed.

Thanks Barbara and Sue for the kind words, I do what I can, not nearly enough though.
