Last night, like a few other nights, we ate at restaurant El Arrayan, and the food was fantastic. We shared fish tacos, had the sierra/mahi mahi fish combo and my wife the shrimp/chicken/beef kebab. This place is a must eat for sure. There's also this really cool tree that only blooms at night and apparently, according to Mauricio the owner for 30-45 days. Its a stunning site watching these amazing pods pop open a reveal their lovely flowers. Heres a pic I took last night. In coming here for the last 8 years I only learn't of it this year, proving this place can always continue to surprise you. I would say that El Arrayan is a must hit on your Zihua restaurant gastro tour!![image]

Thanks for the tip re El Arrayan; we haven't been there yet but will soon rectify that error.

Is the sign showing the full latin name still attached? Put on, I believe, by the local lady responsible for saving that fantastic tree from the municipal tree-killers, when Adelita was renovated. Unfortunately, the rest of the trees around Salvador's old location didn't survive.

About what time do they open? It seems I am always too late or too early and miss the "opening".

We sat down at 645 pm and left at 8ish. So sad they'd butcher something so rare and so beautiful. I have some difficulties comprehending some of the things that happen here from time to time. I'd say gett here by 630 because the restaurant always fills up. Bring some small peso notes to tip the various musicians that walk by and play for you. It's a magical experience!

A truly beautiful natural treasure. Sadly the one that used to sit at the intersection of Juan N. Álvarez and Benito Juárez in front of the old Notario Püblico #1 where it becomes La Boquita was unceremoniusly cut down when that section of the street was repaved a few years ago. Broke my heart and left me extremely disappointed in the government's lack of vision or appreciation for our natural beauty, like so much else that our "representative government" does.

Thank you for sharing you photo and sentiments.

The flower reminds me of one of those fiber optic lamps:

. . . . . . . . . .

...only blooms at night and apparently, according to Mauricio the owner for 30-45 days...

According to author Mark Stebbins, the tree may bloom for a month (maybe it really likes Zihua and that's why it goes even longer there ;) ) but each individual flower only lasts from the evening it bursts open until around the next afternoon. Seems very special to me. I hope to see it while I'm down there.

Wow, that's an old thread. Almost 4 years old, to the day. What's really surprising is that the tree is still standing. Cutting down iconic trees seems to be the norm in Zihua.

The proper name is Clavellina / Pseudobombax ellipticum.
