Hunter Mx sea snake on beach in Troncones

Will I found about a 14 inch live sea snake that had been washed way too far up the beach to get back. He was brown I think, Lindy would know the color better. He had relatively wide yellow bands the entire length of his body. And he had a tail like an eel. I picked him up and let him loose in the water
and he swam away.

Sorry no pictures

I picked him up...

You DO realize of course that every sea snake is not simply poisonous but extremely deadly poisonous, don't you?

near death experience?

I've been trying to find out the name of the snake I saw while snorkeling at Coral Beach. It was swimming below me, from under one rock to under another. About 3" in diameter, with black and narrow dark orange stripes. I couldn't see how long it was, since it was in the process of moving from one hidden spot to another. It took several seconds to see the tail, which did narrow down. Anyone know what it was? Thanks if you do! I'm new to snorkeling, and curious about all the fun creatures I have seen.

Wish I would have seen him. If it looks like Rob's picture below, it was indeed a yellow bellied sea snake and yes quite toxic, though VERY docile. If it was a banded creature then it was an eel. The other give away is the skin, smooth and slimy, eel...dryish and rough, snake.

Be Careful. Do you have my number?

Not agressive but read they are member of the cobra family.

Not really members of the cobra's either. There are sea kraits which are related to terrestrial species but this type is not. It is beyond rare to be bitten by a sea snake under nearly all circumstances.

"Sea snakes are closely related to the venomous Australian snakes of the family Elapidae, but are currently classified in a separate family, Hydrophiidae. Two subfamilies have been listed in the past, the sea kraits (Laticaudinae), and the true sea snakes (Hydrophiinae), though recent work suggests this subfamilial division may be inappropriate."

"These snakes breed in warm waters and they are ovoviviparous with a gestation period of about 6 months. They are helpless on land and they sometimes form large aggregations of thousands in surface waters. The snake has a neurotoxic venom that is used against its fish prey. No human fatalities are known."

"The yellowbelly is the most widely distributed sea snake and is capable of living and giving birth entirely in the open sea (it is totally pelagic)..."
