Obviously they had no idea who you are!! They'll be really sorry once you are rich and famous!
I'm sorry you were treated so badly!

The beaches are the patrimony of everyone in Mexico! You should be constitutionally protected ! Which hotel was this in front of? I'd like to have a little conversation with the owner , or are they untouchable for other reasons?

I'd like to know which hotel it was also.

Every beach I've ever been to in Mexico have sections that accommodate picnickers of all classes by tradition if not custom.

Could have been some low-paid waiter who was having a slow "propina" day and wasn't finding enough gringo turistos to rip off, and maybe decided to give our friend the gears because he looked like he was having too good a time. Takes all kinds.
I'm just taking a guess here, trying to read between the lines in the sand..

Sorry Avi..I think it is a problem..

by andy, Thursday, April 07, 2011, 07:37 (3889 days ago) @ Sharkboy

My young friend, you are tooo kind...

BUT

I think this is a problem. You are a proud Mexican. The beaches of Mexico belong to all Mexicans. Including you, and your girlfriend.

I normally dont get involved in the small town politics..but the way you were treated is not right.

Please let us know which hotel this was so I can make a point of not going there?

People should be treated nicely regardless of where they are from or where they were born. I am not happy when Mexican people treat other Mexican people badly just because they can. That should work the same for all folks.

I am sorry this kind of thing happens to anyone, but more so to young (no, make that any) Mexican tourists trying to have a nice day. Glad to see you being a tourist in Zihua. Also happy that you found Las Gatas for the first time. Most places there are friendly and welcome everyone. Next time you and your girlfriend are going to Las Gatas, send me an e-mail and I will be happy for you to join me in an afternoon of snacks and lemonade.

When Avi told me about this I felt disgusted and enraged. This kid represents the best in the young generation of locals trying hard to protect his home and make a good life in the healthiest way. Though he was born and raised in La Barra this was the very first time he ventured out to Zihuatanejo on a day of 'vacation' with his girlfriend. The fact that he or anyone like him could meet with this kind of treatment is unconscionable and should not go without consequences for those responsible. At least the owner of this hotel should extend a personal apology to Avi with an offer of several days free at the hotel for him and his family. This together with a promise to correct this illegal discriminatory policy immediately might be enough to be an exceptable alternative to a boycott.

It was clearly illegal to pressure him to leave Federal Zone. Knowing the recent history of this particular beach I doubt very much it was simply the act of a lone waiter looking for a tip. Much more likely this represents a clear policy of the hotels there trying to keep the beach clean of 'poor locals' from the view of their high paying mostly foreign guests. Avi said that there were a lot of people inside the place and they all looked American and Canadian to him.

Avi was too embarrassed in front of his girlfriend to even think to ask the name of the hotel. I on the other hand, feeling like a very angry aunt ready to go for the juglar, have asked him to go back to find this out. I suspect a lot of people on this board will want to react to this offense of a young local person well respected and loved on this board for good reason. As soon as I find out what hotel it was, I'll post it along with an open letter to the owner.

By the way, by contrast, Avi spoke very highly of his treatment by the people of Las Gatas. Bravo! They still possess the spirit of Zihuatanejo.

Hasta pronto,
Laura

Yes Please do.

Years ago while vacationing in the Eastern Beaches of Havana I saw a pair of plain clothed police stop a couple of Cubanos, ID'd them, them, then roust them them off the beach where they were not permitted to walk or potentially mingle with the foreigners. I thought to myself:

"Is is what they fought a people's revolution for?"

It disgusted me, along with the completely preferential treatment that we received as turistos and for our "hard currency," enjoying privileges that the locals could not.

I would hope that after a 10 year revolution and 2 million lives lost, that Mexico could offer its people at least that much equality. As a foreigner, I shouldn't have to go and help our friend defend his own constitutional and human rights, but in this case, I would be honoured to have a chance to make some kind of an effort in this regard. Perhaps it might be best if we don't mention Avi specifically when seeking redress, and that might not be completely helpful. A few well translated letters sent to the right corners might do a lot, though, and not just for the someone we know.

That law has since changed and Cubans can now stay at any hotel and go to any beach. Only in Varadero (that I'm aware of) is there still a regulation against mingling between foreigners and nationals.

Meanwhile, here in Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo locals are losing access to their beaches as some beaches become essentially privatized. In Zihuatanejo we've already lost land access to El Almacén, Contramar and pretty much Majahua, too. Many establishments at La Ropa have been harassing locals for years. Though they deny it, Casa Que Canta even went so far as to use explosives to blow up a natural pool at the north end of La Ropa and cement the sharp shards of rock along the rocky shore to keep folks from getting within sight of their guests, and they also removed a popular shade tree and planted several cacti in its place. But they are far from alone in their general discrimination towards locals, especially those of "lesser" economic means.

Mexicanos Discriminating Against Their Own

Many establishments at La Ropa have been harassing locals for years. ... But they are far from alone in their general discrimination towards locals, especially those of "lesser" economic means.

This is one of the most distressing issues I've yet encountered here concerning Zih/Ix. I make a real point of coming here rather than many other places, not least because I want to spend my vacation $$$ in a way that also helps the middle class emerge. To vacation alongside Mexicans as well as being served by them.

All kinds of Mexicans come here, from DF, from Michoacan, from Guadalajara and elswhere... a huge tourgroup of retired teachers from DF packed La Pirata Restaurant on La Ropa when we were there in February, giving so much business to the parasailers that they gave my daughter a unique discount because they were having such a good day (and maybe because I joked with them in Spanish).

Do these people also get the same treatment as our friend did? Is there a way of distinguishing establishments that shun folks like we've heard of..I wouldn't want to patronize them if I knew...

As I have related before simular treatment to Mexican friends of mine was the "straw that broke the camels back" at La Perla a place to which I will never return.

I knew there was a reason..

by Jo in Vancouver, Friday, April 08, 2011, 22:19 (3887 days ago) @ ZihuaRob

stopped into La Casa Que Canta on an early trip to Z as someone had mentioned the architecture..they didn't want to let us in ( 4 old gringos..no fancy clothes) finally they said we could have a look and buy a margarita...worst Margarita I've ever had in Mexico and have never been back ( never wanted to go back) now I know the reason! (Besides their attitude)

Well said Laura. The experience that makes our annual trips to Ixtapa/Zihua so special and complete include the interaction with the Mexican people, whether they are on the beach, sitting next to us in a restaurant or sharing a seat on the local bus. I would love to know what property on the beach this was and who the guilty party was.

I have seen this with some of the venders being told not to approach guests at certain places and think it is deplorable as well. These people are trying to make a living and we don't have to buy if we don't need or want anything. The beach is for everyone to use not just the "guests" who are all here as guests of the mexican people.

I absolutely agree with Laura and others. This hotel must be identified and boycotted. Good on you Avi for your attitude. It is to be admired. You are a true role model for the children of Barra. I am embarassed this happened to you. Have a good day.
