That is a very good article in my opinion. Its explanation of the situation is pretty much consistent with my own understanding of it. There's only a few minor details I could nitpick about, such as:

Calderón charged into the quagmire 15 days after taking office in December 2006, sending thousands of troops to Michoacán — his home state and also that of the notoriously violent La Familia Michoacana, which controlled the state's lucrative mountainside marijuana farms.

La Familia burst onto the scene in September 2006 with the original severed head incident Uruapan, they weren't the longstanding cartel in the region as implied. La Familia came to prominence under Mr. Calderon's watch, as did most of the associated organized crime related violence affecting ordinary people.

I also thought it was a good article. Did you by chance check the little reader poll on perceived safety in tourist areas. I admit that the results surprised me.
