I drove Vancouver-Zihuatanejo and return last month. The drive was easy using cuatas from Nogales to Colima City. The portion of Highway 200 from Tecoman to La Mira is kind of winding, but I've driven worse highways in Canada. (And there is no snow to contend with!)
Road surfaces were generally good to excellent, except for the less than 100 km from Lazaro Cardenas to Troncones. They have made very noticable improvements to the road surface between Troncones and Zihuatanejo during the past year.
Police and military checkpoints became just part of the routine. We found the personnel to be polite and considerate on every occasion.
