Hi John,
I know of a site south of Petatlan at La Chola. The locals in the village have a small museum and can provide a guide to take you to the site. I would echo what Rob has said about respecting the integrity of the site and those involved in trying to develop it in a constructive way. The local guides who have the museum seemed to be very much interested in that point of view and discouraged the idea of personal purchases of artifacts. Although while I was there somebody's cousin tried to sell me something. There is excavation there. (UNAM? or State of Guerrero? I'm not sure about this.) The village is worth visiting itself I think, it's tiny and very pretty and has one restaurant open on Thursdays only except by prior arrangement. We can put people in touch with someone to arrange a tour with the local 'museum' guy. Contact me if you are interested.
