I drove from Tecoman (about 30 minutes south of Manzanillo) to Zihuatanejo in March 2000. We left Tecoman at 06:10, passed the turnoff for Playa Azul at 11:00, entered Guerrero at 11:35, passed the Troncones turnoff at 12:50 and arrived in Zihuatanejo by 13:30.
On our return trip we left Troncones at 06:00 and arrived at Tecoman at 12:20. Manzanillo would have been about another 30 minutes.
The drive from Manzanillo south to Cerro de Ortega is fine. South of there it starts to get winding and stays narrow and winding to La Mira. South of La Mira is fine until the Guerrero border. The road in Guerrero from the border to almost Troncones was much rougher than anything we had experienced north of there (we had driven from Nogales), but it wasn't outrageous. I understand it has been improved since then.
