The most common sea turtles, las tortugas verdes (green sea turles), lay their eggs on our beaches between June and September (during the rainy season). The eggs hatch 45 to 60 days later.

There are many local volunteers that monitor the beaches searching for turtle nests to collect the eggs and take them to protected beach areas for their incubation. Some local beachfront hotels and lodgings provide protected incubation areas as well as the does the Armada Naval next to the municipal pier.

If you go to Hotel Casa del Mar next to the small estuary on Playa La Ropa during this period of desovación and hatching you can usually see baby turtles being allowed to grow a bit before being released, thus giving them a little better chance of survival.
