José Ángel Lara Magaña, who works with the Capitanía de Puerto, is known locally as El Ángel del Mar. In 25 years of service he has rescued 250 people alive and recovered 257 bodies. He also rescued a dog after it had been lost for 4 hours and swimming at sea 28 miles off the coast.

Late last Friday afternoon a fisherman went missing after trying out a new motor on his 23' panga, Mayra. Fortunately he was found by El Ángel del Mar 15 miles off the coast of Los Morros de Potosí at 11:30 Saturday morning and towed back to Las Salinas lagoon. Both the fisherman and his boat are fine.

A few years ago he received national recognition from Presidente Fox for his miraculous career saving lives and finding lost fishermen. Not only are we all proud to have such a wonderful person working for our local Capitanía de Puerto, but we are honored and humbled to count him among one of Zihuatanejo's lifelong residents. He truly is an angel of the sea!
