we stayed at the Sotavento in Feb for the 15th year. If you stay on one of the upper floors, the view is unbelievable & makes up for the inconvenience of the 215 steps to the beach. We have always found it to be clean (although not at all luxurious). Although the hotel got some bad press after Carlos died, many of the old staff are still there & very accommodating. The upper level restaurant is good quality & reasonable. If you don't mind old broken down chairs at the beach or showers that spit out hot water on an irregular basis, you should enjoy your stay. The staff told me that there would probably be new owners by next year but they accepted my reservations for 2007 anyway.

Walk down the street a few blocks to the Blue Mamou for great live music
We never have seen any bugs, I think the Geckos eat them all.
While you are there, take a trip to Barre Potosi & visit Laura (just ask any local where bonita gringa lives). She will appreciate any help you can give to the library/school project
