I am in the process of applying for my FM3 what are the benifits of having this. I have been travelling to Mexico now for 20 years and will be spending a month there in Dec. My goal is to spend 4 or 5 months in the winter but not yet is there a good reason to get this. Any help on this would be appreciated.

It may not be beneficial for you to apply for an FM3. You will have no problem spending 4 or 5 months per year there without an FM3.

An FM3 is beneficial if you come and go regularly. You don't have to worry about getting overlapping tourist cards (180 days, leave after 2 months, come back 2 weeks later and ask for 180 more while your original 180 days would still have been valid). But if you are staying for 4 or 5 straight months, once per year, it probably isn't worth the hassle. It may not even be possible as a Mexican residential address is required and you are required to notify them of changes of address. So this might be a problem if you don't own a home or have a permanent address there. The tax office will literally send out a person to verify that you live where you say you live.

If you are on a tourist card and have to leave and come back, it still won't be a problem if it isn't a regular occurrence. But if you start getting three or more stamps in your passport per year it might start raising some eyebrows as you pass through immigration subsequent times (and continue asking for 180 days each time).

An FM3 visa must also be renewed in Mexico each year, which could be another headache for you.

Unless you intend to open a bank account, get utilities in your own name or a monthly cellphone plan, to leave a foreign vehicle there year round, or to be doing things that involve signing paperwork in front of a public notary, it probably isn't worthwhile. It may also be required for a properly documented, long-term rental contract (the kind where taxes are properly being paid), but more often than not, this isn't the case.
