We recently traveled to Morelia and Patzcuaro on the new autopista and it is
a very easy trip. 4 hrs from Zihua to Morelia, most of it on nice toll road.
A good site for road info is:
We found all of the information, including the toll info, very current.
Morelia is a great city. From Morelia we did a day tour to the monarch
butterfly reserve at El Rosario. We loved it! I can't say enough good things
about our guide, Luis Miguel. He is very professional and knowledgeable,
speaks perfect English and is very reasonable ( $50 for a FULL day trip). I'm
so glad we did not opt to drive ourselves. His website is:
If you want to do this from Zihua, you need to plan two nights in Morelia as
it really is a full day trip from Morelia. Also, it is quite chilly at the
high altitudes where the butterflies are.

On the way back we spent two nights in Patzcuaro, another fabulous town. The
nearby village of Santa Clara del Cobre is a great place to see the local
copper crafting activity. If you want a nice place to stay, we loved La Casa
Encantada. A super B&B, beautifully decorated and with a great breakfast.

A trip to central Mexico can be a great addition to your vacation, if you
are willing to trade a few beach days for the cooler temperatures and richer
culture of the highlands. We found it well worth it.
