recent advice on auto rentals

I've read the archives regarding auto rentals, and was hoping for some updated info...

Which rental company is currently considered best? Any to steer clear of?

Is it safe to use the insurance with my platinum card if the fine print includes Mexico? I'd prefer not to spend the extra for comprehensive, but don't want to get stuck with a huge bill or legal hassles if something were to happen.
