We rented two cars in Zihua in December - I got one at Hertz and my brother got one at Thrifty. Both rezzies were originally made with Thrifty thru Orbitz. I had rented from Thrifty before in Zihua, never having taken the rental insurance - according to Citibank, their Mastercard coverage and my car insurance are sufficient, and even less confusing in the event of a claim. Upon arrival, Thrifty insisted we take the insurance (add $14/day to a $19/day rental - I think not!), and would not rent the car without it. I stepped to the next booth - Hertz - who offered a similar car and the same rate without the insurance. Unfortunately my brother had arrived before me and punted and got stuck with the insurance (cost an extra $170 for 12 days). Net-net, get it spelled out ahead of time, bring your paperwork, but be prepared with a contingency plan.
