Sorry, don't know of any English sources, but it is in the Mexican media often enough. It is a major problem in most urban areas, especially Mexico City, but is also the source of much social unrest here in Guerrero in Acapulco, Chilpancingo, Tecpan de Galeana and here. Nevertheless, it is not given due attention for obvious reasons: it is a political gangplank. Most, if not all, of the political parties are involved: they are responsible for bringing these people here and they all exploit these people for their own purposes (read votes and $$$). However, with good reason they all believe it would be political suicide to deal with the issue and remove the squatters. But it has to be dealt with and it will be eventually. The status quo obviously cannot continue. The taxpayers will not long tolerate the gov't spending money to provide support and services for people who don't pay taxes while also allowing public services for those taxpayers to deteriorate, as they have been.

The latest issue dominating local news has been dealing with the vendedores ambulantes (the wandering vendors), another similarly delicate social problem not altogether unrelated to that of illegal land occupation.

The Governor-elect says he will deal with our problems firmly, including illegal land occupation and ambulantaje, though he has not mentioned any details. So we wait...
