I've driven from Zihua to Acapulco several times. It's 244 kilometers and it takes between 3.5 and 4 hours, not including stops. Buses won't slow you down, the two things that slow you down are animals and speed bumps.

The animals... mainly dogs, pigs, and cows are a real pain. I've hit two dogs and 3 pigs. The pigs will come straight at you sometimes.

There are 74 speed bumps between Zihua and Acapulco. These aren't your typical US speed bumps either, you have to almost come to a complete stop to climb the Mexican speed bumps. Many of the speed bumps are not marked, so you need to be careful.

I always travel at night, but I wouldn't advise you to do the same. Bandits will cut down a tree and put it in the road to make cars and buses stop. When you stop, they rob you.

I've never been stopped, but my car looks like it's worth about $50USD.
