I remember going to Soledad de Maciel 2 years ago. No paved streets, no phone service, just electricity. There are no stores in this little town of maybe 200/300 people but a couple of the houses had one room set aside as a tienda for a few staples. The most interesting part for me was how they got their water. In the winter season there is a 50 foot wide riverbed that has a trickle of water, just wide enough to do the washing. About 15 feet away from the open water for washing they dug down in the dry stony riverbed and sunk a 5-gallon bucket with holes in the bottom. There was maybe 5 inches of water that they scooped out to fill their pails that they used for their drinking and cooking water; a few seconds later, the water filled up in the bucket for another scoop.
This is a real part of Mexico that I had never seen before and that I didn't know even existed.
