The structure that was torn down was our former City hall which we call a "Palacio Municipal". Also demolished were adjacent offices which housed the Tourist Police (who make sure all you tourists stay in line). ;~)
The police have relocated to the building which houses the museum on the waterfront, and the new Palacio Municipal is now where the road forks to Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa coming from the airport.
There was certainly a lot of history to the old building, not to mention that is also the spot on the beach where my wife's family lived and where she was born. Her umbilical cord was buried there!
