Great article. Michoacán is a beautiful state and Patzcuaro is a favorite town of ours. Plaza Quiroga there is an awesome place. Myself and many others consider it the nicest plaza in Mexico. We hope to visit again this next trip.
We stayed - one night only - at the hotel in Uruapan that the writer mentions. It's the classiest place in town.
Situated right beside the hotel is the top end of an amazing (and small) national park that the Rio Cupatitzio flows downhill through. The river winds through the junglelike park and is cleverly drawn from and rediverted many times to spring out a little further downhill in some very beautiful waterfalls and fountains.
When you finally arrive at the bottom - about a 40 minute walk wandering through the trails - you exit from the main gate and can continue to walk (downhill) about 8 more blocks to el centro or catch a cab or bus going down to town or back up to the hotel.
Well worth a visit.
