During the winter months, waters offshore of Zihuatanejo are generally quite calm and it should not be uncomfortable to go out to sea in a Panga even for the inexperienced.
You can never be guaranteed of a porpoise sighting, but the further offshore you go the more water you will cover and therefore more likely to see them, sea turtles, and other nifty things.
You can also never be guaranteed of catching big game when you go fishing for them - although Zihuatanejo is certainly one of the best places in the world for this.
For a nice half-day on the water without fishing, you can charter any of the Pangas - doesn't have to be a captain that is good at finding fish. They can all give you a nice ride and look for sights to see. Rob's website advertises two different charter groups. Or just go down to city dock around 2PM and talk to some of the skippers.
Another alternative would be to talk to the sailboat charter people advertised on this website. Look under "activities".
