We just arrived back on Friday after 18 days in Zihuatanejo. A rude awakening at home - minus thirty degrees and blowing snow. Now we know why we take winter vacations.
This was our third trip to Zihuatanejo. We stayed at the Brisas del Mar on playa Madera (new section). The room was very good, the view magnificent and the hospitality exceptional. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. They seem to go that extra mile to make your stay enjoyable.
We had several good meals at the old standbys - Punterenas, Pollos Locos, Cafe Marina, Casa Cafe, etc., and splurged at KauKan, Coconuts and Chez Paul. In our opinion, Paul's was the best of the splurges. We were disappointed in one of our previous favorites - Daniels - too busy, service inattentive, prices up from previous years and food mediocre.
We met Bill Cooksey from Jaguar Tours at Rick's bar on evening. We went on their jungle/cavern/zip-line outling. A real experience and a lot of fun. We cruised the gold market in Petetlan and found the rings we were looking for. We spent time on Playa Madera, LaRopa and las Gatas. Enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere of Madera the most although Gatas was also fun.
Our quest for 10 peso (or less) beer was fullfilled at a variety of places. We sat through the earthquake at the Jungle Bar, spent time in Rick's, Barracuda and M.J. and Ritchie's.
However, the highlight of the visit was the incredible hospitality and warmth of the Mexican people we had contact with during our stay. At the market, in the shops, at La Commercial, on the busses and just in general, the people were unfailingly polite, friendly and happy. We were also able to renew some friendships with travellers we met on previous trips and made some new friends along the way.
All in all it was just what we needed - a great vacation.
