Zihuatanejo and the surrounding area of this region of Mexico offer a fantastic experience in the purest essence of the word. It is the fantasy that you make of it. It is a dream come true.
But only if you let it be.
What this place isn't is your daily world, and by that I mean you don't have to get up and go to work, take the kids to school, put the trash out, wash and fold the laundry, clean up your house, see the same people you see every day and do the same things you do wherever you live. You leave all that behind when you come here, or rather, you are SUPPOSED to, and that goes for the dang cellphone, too!
Prepare yourself mentally before you leave not just to be away from your home, but to leave all that clutter behind, just for the few days that you'll be here. You can do it! But first you have to want to.
Then, from the information you've gleaned here, imagine your fantasy vacation. Hey, you want to swing in a hammock under the palm trees? We've got that! How about some musicians to serenade you as you stroll down the beach at sunset? We've got that, too! Maybe you want to be in a place where you hear no sounds of civilization, no horns, no sirens, no crying or yelling? We have places like that here! Like to snorkel and swim and bodysurf? No problema! Want to catch that big fish you've only dreamed of? Your chances are good to excellent here! Don't want to do anything at all except lie under a palapa or palm tree on the beach and catch up on some reading far from the crowds? Right here! Maybe you want to play golf or tennis until the cows come home? Moo moo baby, go for it! Like to watch romantic tropical sunsets? We've got sunsets galore with an occasional green flash! The romance is your department, but we can certainly set the stage for you!
See what I mean? This place is a different fantasy and a unique paradise for each person. If you let it be. Let's hope you didn't choose the wrong vacation destination. Because if you're looking for Acapulco or Miami Beach or Waikiki, well... that we ain't!
But I guarantee you this place makes all those Survivor-like series look lame! This is the real thing! And we don't need no stinkin' x-generation game show hype!
This is the place of the musical souls, the warm hearts, the friendly people, the helping hands, and the ready smiles. Songs like "Don't Worry, Be Happy" readily run through your head while you soak in the last rays and watch the sun slide under the horizon with absolutely NOTHING on your mind except the taste of that tropical whateveryerdrinkin' that never tasted better in your life! Enjoy our unique culture and rich history and rhythmic music. Learn some of our ancient language so beautiful to hear and emotional in its expression. Make friends with a people with such happiness in their souls it makes you wonder if they know a secret that you don't about life.
Happiness flows like a slow, lazy river through this land and you can't help but get caught up in its current. And it hits you at the strangest moments. Maybe riding the bus between Zihuatanejo & Ixtapa with the fringe dangling and the plastic Virgin of Guadalupe figure glued to the dashboard below the cracked window sitting next to a mother and her baby girl who keeps looking at you with a smile you will never forget while a musician earns his passage singing the equivalent of the Mexican blues. Or, upon meeting someone in the street, they invite you into their house for refreshments and perhaps a meal, taking you into their home and their world, rattling away to you in a mix of Spanglish that you're sure you understand even though the conversation is pretty one-sided. Or even dining on the beach while a trio of musicians play "Zihuatanejo" for you and you find yourself singing along with them through most of the chorus. Magic! It just hits you and you realize this whole vacation is a dream come true!
Now wouldn't this be one heckuva bad moment for your stupid cellphone to ring?
