ZIHUATANEJO 2003

CAST OF CHARACTERS: (more to be added as days go by)

ALEX & AL - from the interior of B.C. (20 years going to Mexico, 2nd time to Zihua)
LINDA & CRAIG - Al's sister and brother-in-law from Calgary (first time to Mexico or anywhere warm in the winter for that matter)
DONNA & BARRY - friends made through this message board from Edmonton (many trips to Mexico, some for long stays, 1st time in Zihua)

Day 1:
Up at 5:30 to get ready to go to the airport (though this seems early it is considerably more civilized than most flights where we have had to be at the airport at 3:00 AM). Our flight was for 10:35 so set out for the airport about 7:00. Checked in, then went for breakfast. The plane was to be delayed by about an hour but we would have just visited with Linda and Craig at home so made very little difference.

Now I know HMY Airlines is having some trouble filling flights and even has had to cancel all of those after March 13, but our experience with them was totally good. Firstly, we were bumped to "First Class" through some miracle Linda managed to perform, and it was awesome. It will be hard to go back...all the drinks you could drink, lots of legroom, free goody packs with earphones, pillow, room darkeners and cards, plus we could board whenever we liked and got preferred service at the airport. What a deal! We met up with Barry and Donna (easily recognized by an e-mailed photo) on the plane and arranged with them to get a collectivo together and also to look for a place for all of us to stay. We all got our luggage and got through customs quickly - no red lights, hopped in a van (I believe we payed about $8.00 US each) and headed for Casa Sun and Moon. Donna, who's Spanish is better than the rest of ours negotiated on the price and though the manager, Everardo did come down some, we thought it still a bit high ...we are generally budget travellers. The women set out, leaving their hombres at the Miramar for happy hour, and checked out about 4 other places. They were all about the same price and not as nice and it was sooo hot!! Time for our happy hour.
Back to Casa Sun and Moon, where Linda & Craig took 1 suite, we took another and Donna & Barry took a room just for one night. We should have taken a room as well as with Linda and Craig having a kitchen, we never used ours. Plus their is a communal kitchen on each floor - if we stay there again we would go that way. The suites were lovely however and had very nice views. And the staff there are wonderful...we came to love them all and they all contributed to making this on of out best holidays ever.
We settled in, purchased some cold cerveza from the attached tienda and were sitting around the lobby enjoying the feel of the place, the view, the cold cerveza, and discussing where to have our first dinner. A fellow guest suggested Casa Viajes and advised us that the ribs were "to die for". So off we went. Al survived the ribs - the WERE terrific! and Donna shared some of her swordfish pate with all of us. It, too was delicious. Our whole meal with a couple of Bacardi Anejo (love that rum) and cokes each came to 300P per couple. After dinner we walked into town along the canal, stopped at the ATM and ended up stopping at Daniels for a cerveza, had a couple or maybe three, very much enjoyed the band that was playing there, then walked home along the seawalk (much improved from 4 years ago and lit almost all the wasy to Playa Madera).
A Perfect First Day in Paradise!!!
