Follow route 15, which in many sections is now a Cuota autopiste (high-speed divided toll road). If you are in a hurry, take route 15 all the way to just past Uruapan, where you catch the new 37D cuota south through Nueva Italia to La Union, then route 200 south along the coast about 15 miles to Troncones turn-off. 37D is not shown on maps of Mexico you can buy in the U.S. but most of it is finished.
If you are not in a hurry and want to follow the coast for the scenery, you can exit route 15 at Tepic and follow route 200 south along the coast - through P.V. and on south to Troncones. This route will take an extra day, but you might enjoy the scenery and adventure - just watch out for Topes, animals, and children on this road.
The AAA guide gives a good rating to the Hotel Santa Anita in downtown Los Mochis and also the Santa Anita restaurant right in the hotel. Depends on your budget - looks expensive. They also list another - the Plaza Inn, which they say meets AAA guest room security standards. Also expensive (over $100/night). Haven't stayed in Los Mochis though.
