Local newpapers report today that the lame-duck mayor of Petatlán says that he allowed a new tax file to be opened and a tax payment of 700,000 pesos to be received from Interad for the property Cerro de Guamilule because they showed him notarized documents that he believed were legitimate and because the gobernador says to accept all payments for property taxes. He says that the Garibo-Vargas family have neither shown him similar documents that demonstrate their ownership nor paid property taxes. He also says they have never tried to see him, directly contradicting reports by the family that he has refused to meet with them.
He also tried to "clear up" something the síndico said recently when he accused the mayor of committing fraud and accepting bribes from Interad. The mayor said that the síndico also accepted money for "consultation fees" and only complained after he stopped receiving money.
And he said that while he didn't order police to protect Interad's interests at Guamilule, he did "make a deal" that they would "contribute to public security", and he's sorry if anyone misinterpreted what that meant, but that Interad only "bought the police breakfast". At no time, he says, did he order them to protect Interad's interests or were they paid by Interad to do so.
Uh huh. Well, that's what he said. I say his pants are on fire.
