The "metal working village" is actually called Santa Clara del Cobre and the site of the main plaza with copper streetlamps shimmering in the sun is definitely worth the drive.
Try to make it to Lake Zirahuen, which is near Uruapan, and is beautiful and pristine. The Pescado Blanco (native whitefish) is said to be the best there.
