BUT(once crossing the border and paying for your 'import sticker' applied to the windscreen), holders of an FM3 need NOT maintain current U.S./Foreign registration.... indefinitely. My little car still has Y2K reg-stickers (from my last U.S. driving trip). I keep a copy of said Federal law in the car at all times (optainable from any U.S. Consulate).
And since I'm IN Mexico, I maintain Mexican Auto Insurance.... from one of the largest Mexican carriers, GNP Seguros (Grupo Nacional Provincial). VERY reasonable annual premiums, and my agent here in San Miguel is TOPS.... One minor "fender-bender" in Puebla last year that was repaired in 'record time', hassle-free upon my return to SMA. And as with all insurers, the higher the deductable, the lower the premium....
Y Feliz Viaje.... I LOVE that drive.... especially the welcome side-trips through the wonderful Huichol Country!

Perhaps "things" have changed over the past decade, but I was under the impression that you needed to apply (and receive) your FM3 BEFORE you entered Mexico....? Aka: Issued from a Mexican Consulate nearest you Stateside, No?
