Who has the BEST tacos al pastor in Zihua?

Ok friends.....back into checking out this board now that I will be making my first trip down in many years.
Prior to marriage I was coming down twice a year in the early 90's to 2000......last time about 2005.

I'll be staying in Ixtapa but travel almost nightly for dinner to Zihua.

Been to Mexico City and other interior cities plenty of times and have had GREAT tacos al pastor.
And now I will be in search of having these down there, so please.....hit me up with your BEST place I can visit to devour these little gems.

Welcome and enjoy your stay! My favorites are Papa Loca and Los Braseros...Can't go wrong there...

We've been meaning to try El Buen Pastor, at the curve between the mercado and the canal. Think it opens at 5. Looks great, but it's always the wrong time for us.

Los Oaxacos across from Super Pizza, one block up from La Cancha on Cuatemoc. We've had them three times already, always good. Fast service too!

Agree, Los Braseros or La Papa Loca, probably in that order.

Unfortunately, we don't have in Z/I a tacos al pastor place like El TIzoncito or El Califa, my personal favorites.

If you are cooking, I recommend you try making al pastor fish. Buy Achiote at the grocery store or the mercado, mix it with orange juice and out on top of fish and bake - if you like to add some pineapple you can do that too. Once done, add onion, cilantro, lime and some salsa.

Los Braceros

El Pastorcito is a taco restaurant at Las Palmas and Jose Morelos (near Papa Loca) which is very cheap and tasty. Not a word of English spoken here. The pastor is very good and very easy on the wallet.

Los Oaxacas downtown a block up from the basketball court. Cannot recommend the Trip Advisor favorite Papa Loca as it is right on a busy, dirty street.

I asked the guys working at the lobby bar at the Azul Grand who has the best tacos. They came back with La Flecheta for barbacoa and Pastorcito for al pastor. I then checked with the employees at the front desk and they leaned towards La Flecheta. We went there twice as we found no reason to go elsewhere and they are open 24/7 so it worked good for lunch tacos. We will definitely give Pastorcito a try next time. Before that trip Papa Locas was our favorite but the bar guys at the Azul Grand thought that they were just ok.

La Flecheta is a popular place with the locals and a taxi drivers popular stop. Definitively a good spot too and especially if you need to eat late at night...

Definitively a busy street but as for dirty, really??? It is not just a Trip Advisor favorite(which frankly does not mean that much) it is a local favorite too for a reason...

I believe your recipe is fish or pork pibil .. not al pastor. Pastor is a vertical rotisserie of stacked pork shoulder usually with a large pineapple slice on top which drips down the pork as it's slow cooked on the rotisserie.

Did you know that tacos al pastor (shepherd's tacos) were derived from Lebanese-Arab immigrants to Mexico and their traditional shawarma dishes?

James, thanks for your message. I am Mexican, born and raised and now living outside of Mexico, so I do know very well what a trompo de pastor is. This is a hack/easy homemade recipe for having pastor fish, make it if you want, or not if you don't want to.

For the real thing you would have to add chile guajillo, seco desvenado y limpio, en polvo (for the marinade).

Achiote is used not only for pastor and pibil, for for other recipes as well. Here some info (in Spanish) of its uses and origin.

Our fallback has always been La Flama del Tison just down from Zorro's. Sit along the paseo. If that's full, ask them to set up a table further along the sidewalk. It's usually 'way too hot inside, and the TV's always too loud. No bus exhaust and traffic noise, which are no-charge add-ons at many of the other places. Five for 20 pesos last time we were there. And it may be sacrilegious, but we like to squirt some crema on our tacos.

For fish tacos, I'd go with the Baja-style at Los Braseros, or those served by Mauricio at El Arrayan on Calle Adelita.
